Yeah, that's one of the things with many devices anymore, they may have been thought out as being one thing, but then other features are added, and they become many-in-one. Often then, the workflow becomes sort of "special", too unique, and so the usability becomes awkward, or complicated, convoluted.
I personally have loads of such machines, and I mainly use them for their initial intended purpose. However, I don't want to box myself in, since even these devices sometimes have additional cool features that I might like to use.
Some of the traditional workflow of the MPC, to me, is strange. E.g., the MPC programs never really made sense to me, so I like the new changed MPC3 version better in this regard. But then again, I came from Pro12/24/Cubase and coding trackers (yeah, long time ago), essentially DAW style solutions.
Oh! Speaking of, I do have a Q700 laying around. I actually "found it" (i.e. dug it out) recently for some odd reason I cannot remember. I had no floppies laying around, so I bought a USB floppy drive (it basically emulates like a thousand 3.5" disks using a USB stick) and replaced that old built-in drive with that. Awesome! And sadly... I will probably never use it. It was "laying around" (i.e. stashed in a closet) for a reason.
I must say that I like the new DAW visuals (from the videos) and structure of MPC3. This is what I thought the MPC X was when I originally bought it years back. That was the vibe I got from how Akai was showcasing it.
The audio tracks aren't really all that appealing, to me, because I already use a 24-channel multitrack mixer, but drum/FX sampling is.
