that sound waaaay better, than $300,
haven't checked on price tbf as I can do it by myself with ~90-95% success rate, I had a couple of failures over the years though - some were unrecoverable

from the website :

once the job is complete you will be invoiced the remainder of payment due.

that to me reads as you pay 60 up front. and the remainder (60 - 220) is due once project is finished.

maybe we are saying the same thing?

agree that those who may need that it could be worth it. thats what i was saying in my post - im not the demo for it because im no where hitting that mark plus ive got the X se ( in addition to the live) so im good.

Yes we're saying the same thing & everything ain't for everybody, but we can hopefully agree that its good to have options.

or the ones that need more RAM ;)

but now that MPC 3.x changed the way tracks work, it might not be as needed as much. I can't have 25 "songs" in 1 project like I could in MPC 2.x. The MPC has plenty of RAM if you are doing 1 song. But when you expand to multiple songs in 1 project then that become more dicey.. but Akai's seriously disabled that flow in 3.x by forcing the track structure in a project.

there are MANY ways to use the MPC, not just they way that you use it

There's good reasons for more RAM for certain users. I doubt most people people that would willing to paid for this are not power users. I'm just happy we live in a world that someone I don't know can make something many people may need/want that the company won't. I know you was joking, but being able to load more RAM hungry plugins & or samples can make your music sound fatter, but your beats will only sound "phatter" if you're nice like that.

 Yeah I was clearly joking

But I do disagree with your assumption that mostly power users would buy it. It’s usually the guy who isn’t “very nice like that” who gets all the upgrades and latest greatest kit. If they have the best it’ll make their music better. There’s a huge market for this type of consumer

You're free to disagree.

dustyslices wrote:$300 to change two chips? sorry shouldn’t laugh, business is business and if there is market for it then why not but come on son… lololololol

Looks like 4 chips, they're soldered on or something like that. IMO considering the video is about an hour long, the chips probably come to $70 and it's $220, I don't think $150 profit to pick up and drop off an MPC, remove 4 chips, replace them and send it back is too much to ask. Especially considering the chance something goes wrong or you get a super Karen as a customer.

I mean I'm sure I could do it as well, but I have probably more like an 80% success rate with this harder stuff, so paying someone is worth it.

The way I've started to stop myself from overbloating myself with projects is to adjust for my time, give myself a $50hr. wage and then see if I need to do it myself. Knowing me after figuring out all the in/outs of this, then getting the parts and doing it I could easily see putting at the least 2 hours into it, maybe three, so besides postage it's nearly a wash.

I think the price is absolutely fine considering what's involved, only you can decide whether it's worth it for your particular MPC model.

The issue for me would be the liability if he breaks your mainboard, it isn't clear what would happen in that scenario (which given the nature of this mod would seem to be a reasonable concern).

I use an mpc live as a stem player for live sets so I can play back audio tracks while syncing other hardware and sending a click to a drummer. The downside to this is that that its really easy to use up all the ram very quickly.
It's looking like disk streaming is going to sort this issue otherwise I would have been interested in this mod!

Doesn't the ram use swapping? I have this 500Gb SSD built in that could easily extend the ram in that way.

Or am i talking nonsense?

I think if you do this sort of thing you definitely have to factor that in to the cost of doing business. So one broken machine means the last 6 upgrades made no money etc. If he has a business license and insurance that could factor in, but IMO it's almost always cheaper not to use your insurance.

Yeah, for a legit business you would expect them to cover any damage and factor this into their pricing, but from what I can see, none of the FAQs in these repair/modding sites seem to specifically answer the question 'What happens if you break my MPC while applying the mod?'.

There's talk of warranties etc, but these seem focused on offering a warranty for any parts used in the mod rather than covering any issues that may arise from carrying out the repair in the first place. I'm not saying any of these sites are not going to make things right, but there's definitely a big leap of faith required for the customer.

But for the ram mod, there's actually no info at all on anything beyond stating a 90 days parts & labor warranty and a residential street address to send your MPC to.
