From a technical standpoint, the MPC XL is excellent. Its architecture and workflow diverge from my older MPC X in several meaningful ways, yet the core operational model remains consistent enough that transitioning between the two is seamless. Way to hit it out of the park, Akai. Truly!

As I’ve worked through the hands‑on button layout and the newly added UI‑level editing tools, a few areas stood out where usability and workflow efficiency could be improved.

With the current physical‑button set, every mode I rely on is already directly accessible. The remaining modes aren’t part of my workflow, which makes the persistent vertical side‑menu bar feel unnecessary. I’d strongly prefer an option to hide it, as it occupies valuable screen real estate without providing functional benefit in this context.

In practice, it amounts to roughly an inch of unused space along the left side of the display.

For automation, I’d like to see support for true envelope or curve automation rather than relying solely on discrete, manually placed events. A continuous curve with editable breakpoints—similar to note nodes—would allow the system to interpolate at a chosen resolution and output the resulting data as MIDI events. This would significantly streamline expressive parameter editing.

Given the touch‑driven workflow, this curve‑based approach would be far more natural, especially within the smaller automation‑window section. The interaction model aligns well with touch input, and the constrained space makes continuous‑curve editing a more efficient and ergonomic solution.

Also, the full‑width popup information banners can be disruptive. They occupy the entire screen while active and block interaction with the underlying UI, which becomes irritating when they appear during workflow‑critical operations. This was the same on the MPC X.

Anyways, these were some key elements that stood out as I was getting acquainted with the system.

Do you mean the left side shortcut panel that you can drag out into view? This can be switched off in preferences > general (except in the 'main' screen).

Love it. No regrets with the purchase.

Maybe they meant in main screen mode where is always on the screen. I like it like that tho. I do wish the side-menu tab when it's closed could be made invisible or be moved to the right or bottom of the screen. I'll send a request.

Love my XL. I'm sure we will get even more optimization with the interface as the updates come, but as it is now there is a lot of customization you can do to follow your workflow.

The XL is perfect for my workflow im able to just create in standalone and use my PC when needed for great plugins like omnisphere, Kontakt and more . Im hoping for the arranger to be worked on in future updates button layout I like alot and still use my X on occasions.. cant ask for more when this is enough but let's get greedy give us more.. i can see myself selling my kontrol mk3 keyboard :-D :-D

Another fairly self‑evident enhancement came to mind: the digital manual should ship as part of the firmware update, with a dedicated “Manual Mode” menu entry that provides immediate, in‑workflow access.

I will check it out. Thanks for letting me know!

To me, that seems like a natural preference toggle, in ANY mode, and especially on the MPC XL since it has a dedicated menu button.

Absolutely I meant there too (though I didn't even realize there was an option already for the other "modes") and thanks for requesting.

Could you please let me know where I can submit requests? I went to their support page and got the "AI", it sent me to some DJ forum, which seemed odd, but I posted on there, and got some moderator saying I was way off... Skynet is taking over... NOTHING! Ha ha ha.

The Akai Ai chat is hit or miss, but so there human agents. Just this week I sent 2 requests at once & one gave me the usual help but the other said I got go to the Force 3.5 (I'm on the Force) beta link & said that it still the official link to sent request, but I challenged that & was I can keep using the link I've been using which is this one for the Force/MPC:

I still don’t understand the resistance to supporting a mouse — or in my case, a trackball — on the MPC XL. It’s a natural extension of the touch‑driven workflow. For me, the motivation is straightforward: precision. A mouse or trackball offers far finer control than one of my fat fingers, especially when working inside small UI regions or adjusting fine‑grained parameters.

And it’s not as if I’d ever replace the hands‑on interface — that’s one of the best parts of the XL. But in areas like Grid View, the touch interface becomes awkward. You’re constantly shifting the meaning of your finger between the pencil, eraser, region tool, and magnifying glass. That mode‑switching friction makes precise editing feel clumsy. A cursor‑based input device would make those interactions deliberate, predictable, and efficient.

There’s no competition — for detailed editing, a mouse or trackball simply wins.

Another noteworthy area is Pad Perform. With save/load progression maps, users could define any custom progression and bring it back instantly. That single feature would shift Pad Perform from a scale‑degree generator to a full harmonic workstation, delivering far more powerful musical tools at your fingertips. And realistically, it wouldn’t impose a heavy development burden on Akai.

I thought you could save custom progressions :hmmm: Or maybe I’m not understanding what you’re saying

I re-organized all the icons on the menu screen and the quick launch side bar (mpc x, force). Surely there are 4/5 useful things you could put there?

From a workflow standpoint, that shift makes perfect sense. With the MPC XL, I don’t really need that side‑menu anymore — every mode I actually use, and nearly all of the meaningful operational modes overall, are already reachable directly through physical buttons. On the MPC X, absolutely — the menu mattered. On the XL, it’s basically redundant.
