Roland Ms-1 users

So i just scored one off a local kijiji ad for 50$ and so far this is thing is pretty cool. Going to be using it to sample drums and maybe some samples before resampling into the 20000xl. Any of you guys still use these i know ill green did at one point any tips or secrets lol. Also not too sure if get how the pitch works with sampling at 45.

I was just about to make this thread last night too. No, it wasn't brief stint that I used the MS-1. It was my first sampler that I have from 1995 til now.

Things to know:

-No timestretch, so the best thing to do is to use the Master Pitch to sync samples with the turntable or CD source. Say you got your drum loop ready in the MS-1 but the piano from that Lieberachi record is too fast. Hit Utility and speed up the pitch of the drum break until it blends with the piano. After sampling the piano, slow down the Master Pitch and see what happens.

-Use Master Pitch together with Sampling Grade to alter the speed and sound when sampling or playing. Really alters the sonic spectrum.

-Divide feature is a destructive chop shop. Slice very accurately.

-Internal Memory can sample up to 56 seconds on LONG1. Unfortunately, even if you found the FLash Memory Card, it will not expand sample time. The card is more of a storage and you can only play one sample at a time from the card...BUT, you can sample and play long samples from the card and use the remaining 3 polyphony from the internal memory to create beats.

Thanks for the tips man havent had much time to fiddle around with it but should get into it tonight. No need for the extra storage basically sample back into the mp and trim etc from there. Do you know how the pitch % compares to semitones?

Also not sure if its just my unit or all of them but this thing can get pretty noisy. Listening through head phones there is a lot of noise and it seems kinda quiet on the way out.

i used to use it especially to sample reverb tail of snares in normal samplerate slightly disorted. This shit gave really nice sound signature. Also i used it a lot for fx sample sounds, it was nice addition to mpc 2500. Now i do not really regret selling it, s-10 does this tasks better imho

You have any songs where we can hear this snare tail trick in action? As for the s-10 how do you like that thing? i have a s330 that i picked up a while back but havent used it much. I believe they have a pretty similar sound.

I don't know really, but it sounds like 1 semitone.

Once you know where everything is, its all up to you to use it creatively. We all use the machines differently, I chose to turn it into a groove box because I had no choice, it was all I had and can get and so I had to flip it hard like if I had what the big boys had.

Yeah, RDAC (Roland Digital to Analog Converter) is what gives these machines their distinct sounds. Company secret recipe type shit.

i'm pretty sure i have used only ms-1 sampler in this track

in the rest tracks i have used both s-10 and ms-1.

s-10 has hm it's own 12 bit sound. It's much different than eg. mpc 60's.
It is rather clean sampler but has its own hiss and punch.
If i could describe it it's rather like rock hard sound, especially when pitched down a little bit and sped up later.

if you want you can upload here some samples and i will pass it through the s-10.

Nice track man. I made a beat last night using it to sample the drums and then layered on the mpc and tbh these are the best results ive ever gotten on drums. Straight slammin! In love with this thing allready

Yeah, it greases up the drums real nice. I wish Roland would remake these but with an SD reader, 16 pads and 12 polyphony and sold for $199. That'll be the day.
