Finally using dusty gear...adjusting my midi connections...

Damn...its 4:05am here...

I'm awake messing with old gear since I can't go to sleep...someway to spend spring break.

Anyway, I finally got a desk...which gives me the room to hook up gear thats been collecting dust in the corner. I did a search on midi thru..but didn't find anything 100% satisfactory so here we go...

Midi out (from Micro Korg) ---> Midi in (on MPC3k)

Midi out (A: From MPC) ---> Midi in (on MicroKorg)

Midi out (From S950) ---> Midi in (on MPC3k)

Midi out (B: From MPC) ---> Midi in (On S950)

So that is my old setup..nice and simple..no probs..

here is the new setup (or what I'm attempting to setup)

Midi out (from Micro Korg) --> Midi in (on MPC3k)

Midi out (A:From MPC)--> Midi in (on MicroKorg)

Midi out (from Roland W-30 --keyboard) --> THRU -->Akai S950 --->Midi in (on Proteus 1) --> Midi Out (From Proteus 1) ---> Midi In (on MPC 3k)

Is this correct? Doesn't seem to be happnin for me.

I want my Roland keyboard to play the data from the Proteus 1 and sounds from the S950. I really just want the Roland to play out of the Proteus and then send the info into the MP and have it control it like I do the MicroKorg. I don't need the keyboard to control the S950 right now, but I don't have 1 more midi cord right now (going to GC in the morn) so I wanted to try "thru"

Anyhow, I know I'm missing or overlooking something simple. Maybe I have the actual channels mixed up? Shoot I don't know, I probably need one or two more midi cords. Any help is appreciated. And yes..I searched through newbieland...and mpc environments.

Let me see if i can help. The Microkorg connection's are to your satisfaction so i will mess with the other three, the roland the s950 and the proteus.

I want to assume that you will not be using the sounds on the Roland since you did not mention it but here goes. Turn Local off off on the Roland.

Roland out -> Mpc In

Mpc Out -> Proteus 1 In

Proteus 1 Midi Thru - Akai s950 Sampler

aight.. the S950 and Microkorg are working fine.

I have the W-30 playing sounds out of the Proteus but when I press record/overdub on the MPC3 its not recognizing midi data from the proteus or the W-30. Here let me explain it like this.

Midi Out on W-30 ---> Midi In on Proteus

Midi In on W-30 ----> Midi Out (C) on MPC

Midi Thru on W-30 --->Midi out on Proteus

Midi Thru on Proteus ---> Midi in on MPC

I've turned LOCAL off on the Keyboard and when I press the keys the midi light flashes on the proteus and I get sound. When I press record on the MP and play a little something from the keys..it is not playing back the midi info (controlling the W-30 thru the proteus or vice versa? (Controlling the Proteus and W-30 all at once) The MP just plays nothing since it recieved nothing. Know what I'm sayin?

All help is appreciated.

Best way to do this, don't use thru's on your controller, set up W-30 on midi in and out A,

Midi out B, S950,

Midi out C, Microkorg,

midi out D, proteus

Local off on the W-30, soft thru on in the mpc midi page.

That way, the keys on the w-30 always pass midi thru the mpc, recording everything, even when playing the w30 itself.

just go to A for w 30, B for 950, C for micro korg, and D for proteus.

This is very simple. If i were you, i would use the MPC 3 to handle midi and channelization issues.

Hook up the Roland in's and out's to the MPC's in's and out's then connect the Proteus to the midi thru of the Roland W-30 Keyboard.

Assign Channels 1-8 to be received by the Roland then assign channels 9-16 to be received by the Proteus. Read your user manuals on activating and deactivating channels.

Thanks d_98se and elmacaco. I'm going to try the simple way that elmacaco suggested 1st and then in the process of using my equipment I'll mess around with what d_98se suggested.
