The Next Step...

I'm looking at developing my production techniques and was briefly considering going down the screen based route and getting a little lap top and logic etc. til i realised its gonna cost me about £2000!

so i've decided to build on what i have already which is 2000xl, some drum samples (basic) and a midi keyboard (korg x5d).

so some questions:

1) Which MIDI keyboard should I invest in next? I'm looking for newer sounds, preferebaly with some decent eastern drum sounds.
2) where should i start with building on my drum samples?
3) Is it worth considering using screen based technology in conjunction with my MPC? Does anyone else do it?

A PC might be a step down, b/c you will rely more on your eyes than ears.

You want to step up your production???

Cop some processing gear or a high end analog desk, you already got a sampler and sequencer, why buy more gear that does the same?

Hardware is a possible ROUTE BUT I thought that Money Was An ISSUE

Trust Me U Can And Prolly will Spend More than £2000! Easily on the Proppa Hardware Setup and I Thought She Said Se DID NOT WANT 2 Do THAT ....................................

ok well lets just say that for now im not gonna go down the screen based route and just stick with my MPC.

Light weight, lots of new great presets and no more than £300 (about $500).

Hi - maybe consider getting a very inexpensive MIDI controller keyboard (no sounds) and then a separate sound source module. buying a midi controller keyboard is a good investment as 1) you save money on subsequent synths as you can get the rack version which is cheaper 2) you save space in your studio - most of us can survive with a single keyboard.

For a sound module with lots of presents and sonic potential, maybe the original Access Virus. Its a virtual analogue and very programmable. Would have thought you could get these for £300ish. Take a look in:

Fatar has some good MIDI Keyboard controllers in your price range

You don't need another keyboard. Just get a sound module and use your korg as a midi controller. I would reccomend a emu sound module.You can get a used one for about 250 dollars.

I agree. The X5D is already light and compact enough if that's what you need. If you're mostly looking for eastern drum sounds why don't you just sample or buy some samples of them for the MPC? I know they make training CDs that have all the ragas on them. Are there people in your neighborhood that actually play? Then just get a mic and sample them. I used to work in a studio where the owner was a tabla player, and I could never program something better or faster than we could just record it.

That said, with just the X5 you will eventually need more chromatic sounds so a module or rack sampler is the next step.

oh good that was my next question.

sounds like ur not clear on what ur objectives are, and in music production u need to be otherwise u can get swept up in buying the latest gear/software and neva mater ur setup.

perhaps u should ask urself what kind of music u r aiming to make then which pieces of gear in ur current setup allows u to get the results u want then build from there.
