Best genre of music in...

minor? When i got the mpc the only thing i heard about is to get soul records. now i got a whole bunch and after messing w/ them for a while i didn't think of the fact that almost every song is in major. i think minor samples sound so much better than major imo, so which genre of music is usually in a minor key (other than classical because i have enough of that kind of music) and also more unique? i have not listened to very much older music and only listen to modern rap and jam rock so i am not too good in this area

Can't you adjust the pitch to change keys?

My theoretical knowledge on chords is not very evolved but AFAIK you can tune whatever you want, you can not tune a sample of major chord to a minor chord.

Try some blues and jazz.

And a lot of soul songs are in minor keys. I can't imagine you have none that are.

Also, even songs in major keys sometimes use minor chords. Listen out for those parts.

start listening to more soul or whatever sound your going for, you gotta LISTEN to the music to hear what there is to sample...

listen while u work, walk, read, whatever - dont sleep

Don`t want to come off as harsh but doesnt mpcs have pitch and the 4k has pitch correction. If you have the ears you can change it. Think like a dj aka musician.

yo, you can make ANY thing sound minor, even if it's a happy ass C major chord, hit the right tensions (out of key notes) underneath, like wit your bass or whatever, you can make it bang..

if you can make happy shit sound angry then you roll right, you know?


and for music.. jazz. there tons of dark jazz out there, you can get mad cheap jazz records too!

i think your lack of replys was just due to the question being a bit esoteric...loads of genres mix...hell a lot of jazz is based on the harmonic minor which is different on the way up than it is down...

musical genres with overtly minor leanings?

trance- not the original kind but that stadium shite that calls itself trance- like the dance equivilent of neo-classical-rock this genre loves the minor scale and simply loves big dramatic minor scale riffs and progressions- very classical sounding
dub- lots of minor chords here, not always to a scale but dub is often the dark to ska's lighter happier side...
techno- if a scale is gonna be sued it will be minor or a vraiant of- if not something weirdass...nothing major as a rule- you'll be lucky to find a scale...

i cant think of any other genres which use that scale all the time, both dnb and house love the minor scale but need to jazz it up so its not too dramatic, a lot of blues is minor based but they use blue notes and scale jumps to give that funky blue flavour...

when it comes to ethnic style there are definitly genres almost exclusivly written in a minor or minor variant...flamenco comes to mind (although think the actual scale is phyrigian mode than an aeolian)

and as someone said major is relative to minor....you could play a c major chord and then add an a at the bass to get an a minor chord....not the same as keys but the two are inextricable linked
