Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By drummerboy52282 Wed May 11, 2005 1:24 pm
Why O Why would Akai make the 2000xl expandable to only 32md and the 1000 comes with 32mb and expandable up 128mb. This boggles my mind. I mean I know that the 2000xl came out a while ago, but they have had a multi card reader why not more memory like the 1k. I don't get it. You spend all this money for the better mpc (2kxl), but the 1k has more memory right off the bat. WHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Someone tell me!

Umm... how much memory does one need

I have 18megs installed on my MPC and haven't felt the need to expand futher. I'd reach the limit of 128 samples before I run short on ram.

.... but thats jus me.

Yo mddle, Are u dealin with just drums or actual musical samples. If its just drums, then yeah, 18 would be more than enough. But I am talking bout some nice loops and so forth

i also got 18 megs (plus 2 megs internal) and that shyt equals like 100 seconds of stereo sampling time and 200 seconds mono. with 32 megs you got crazy hundreds of seconds.. that should be more than enough for making beats, it's not like you're supposed to compose a symphony or anything

by the way drummerboy5228321443, you don't happen to own an mpc yourself do you?

Yo cheech slow down buddy. Its obvious that plenty people ask for more internal ram........hence the lastest MPC series the 1k, which comes with 32 and is expandable to 128mb. But Yo I'm not trying to argue, just asked a simple question. But tell the truth.........................I made a good point huh? Yeah Guy.

Oh and yes I do own an MP..........2kxl

it's just that sometimes people go crazy with their sampling time, always wanting more, and yet they can't manage to make even a simple beat with all that time.

then again i need to remember that not all people make strictly boom-bap beats on an mpc.. i guess you'd need all that sampling time if you got huge multisample libraries.

oh, and that point about xl being the "better" mpc... i think quite a few heads on this board would disagree. and i'm not talking about the 1k..

if you need more sampling time pick up a cheapo rack sampler like the s2000 or s5000. i was able to get my s2000 full expanded for 150.00 canadian. you can have the same capacity, if not more, than the mpc2kxl in addition to having flexible connectivity with a pc along with the power of two standalone units. another option you have is to get a nice laptop and rock that with as much ram as you afford.

like others have told you already, the mpc2kxl was made way before the mpc1k and uses a completely different (cheaper) generation of ram. the addition of the card reader really has nothing to do with the matter.

you also failed to mention the breadth of features the mpc2kxl has over the 1k, such as timestrech, editing, note capacity, and etc.

the mpc has a solid sequencer, that's it's strenght... don’t focus on it’s apparent limitations. if you need more you can always use it in conjunction with other gear or software. use what you have first and take it to that level... in most cases you will find that less is more. quality over quantity is always a good idea.

a wise musician once told me it's not the notes but the spaces between the notes that make the music.

i have my 2kxl equiped with 32mb and haevn't felt the need for more, and i'm always up for some loops...but who would like to sample 32mb of loops? wheres the artistic point in just putting togehter tons n tons of loops...??

but if you really need more time, run your sampling source faster...then tune it down again....(with this u will get a kind of worn out, bit of crappy sound [as always when tuning sounds...]...but sometimes that can be a nice effect...)

(just imagine working on sp1200 with only 10 sec rec. time, 2,5 sec on each of the four banks....thats tuff, but enpowers your creativity...)

and sorry for my bad english....

Nah... I've use my MP for everything from Multisamples, to loops, to remixes as to where I've taken entire acappellas and played them over the beat simultaineously.

But, dude had a good point, if you have elaborate multisample programs and things of that nature you may run into problems with memory.

Maybe we use our MP's dif'rently. I have a rather unorthodox method of choppin, and I always speed up the sample source, as dude said.

When I bought my XL it came with maxed memory and I have never ever ever come close to filling it up.

Shit I haven't even filled up my 60's memory yet and that has a lot less.

And I use it for whole beats start to finish not just drums.
