Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By sicilianoNYC Wed Jun 22, 2005 12:44 am
ive searched and read literally about 50-60 threads about this and still cant make upo my mind. Im buying something used off ebay and I kinda want the 1000 due to the size and 128ram and compactflash cards (cuz i already have a usb reader for my laptop and a 256 mb card) and i have the following software:
sound forge
acid pro 5
ableton live 4
adobe audition
Fruity loops 5

So im thinking if i ever travel i can take the 1000 wit me and all but i wont have time stretch and reverse and zoning (WHICH I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THAT MEANS AND DID a search in here on it)......

BUT THEN AGAIN my friend with a 2000xl tells me a 1000 is nice but its a hassle to take a sample from the mpc put it onto the cpu then use a program to time stretch or whatnot and then back to the MPC..... And all my fav producers use the 2000xl u never see anyone talkin bout the 1000....

HONESTLY i want your opinions cuz they are gonna lead me to buy something within the next 2 days

:) THANKS

I have the 2k but i'm gonna have to go with the 1000.Just by your needs it sounds like you would be better off with the 1000.If you want a portable setup with your laptop and usb,the 1000 is it.Don't be fooled, because you can chop and timestretch faster with most software than on the xl.I love my 2k,don't get me wrong. It just seems more reasonable you going with the 1000.Imo.

No doubt.Besides it's not the machine it's all in you.If you study, learn, experiment, and practice faithfully, you'll be on your way.

you can do it like that. but like what stryke said if you plan on using it for computer beats than you might wanna consider the 1000. it's more friendlier with computers that the xl with the usb n sh!t.

i mean i dont mind just using the 2kxl and not the cpu but i got all these programs i mentioned above although im not very experienced in any too well, from what i messed wit sound forge it will do reverse and time stretch VERY EASILY and zoning can be done (via cut and paste im assuming)

I dont mean to bother u guys cuz i know this topic was beaten to death but ive honestly read a TON on this site and just want whats best for me....and i dont wanna regret buying a 1000 but i doubt that would happen

you can make any of that hip hop with MPC 1000. I wish that the 1k would stop getting bad reviews everywhere I still can't wonder why people are thinking they can't get anything done with a 1k

u st8 cause it seems uve done some of ya homework which is the most important part verses jusk askin whats better. if you dont kno a lot about the programs you werkin wit u and if u plan on usin themu should experiment wit em. holla at one ov ya boyz wit the xl and see if yall can phuk wit the programs with the xl. then decide from there. determine if the 1000 or the xl is better for those programs. do a liitle more homewerk on the 1000 as far as how it werks with the programs. you'll be better off by just takin ya time and learnin some of this sh!t so dont be in a big hurry.

you can get it done wit it no doubt. but everything is so crammed together and it takes so long to chop sh!t up. the 2000 and xl seem more user friendly to me.

damn whats that about. dont take my word for it. its just my personal opinon. its not a bad machine at all. im just used to the xl after many years of use. but if you plan on usin it wit programs then u shouldnt have that problem. but hey.... thats something u should look at.

From what you've said I'd go for the 1000 in your position . I have an XL and love using it without a doubt , but you already have a studio in you pc , and if you want an mpc the 1000 is a nice machine . It makes sense to me that the 1000 would be better for you . Don't let whatever 'status' the 2000(XL) might have sway you .

Its like this the MPC 1000 compared to MPC 2000XL

The main improvements of the MPC 1000 over the 2000XL are as follows:

1. Smaller, lighter and more portable
2. Re-sampling of the audio outputs
3. Normalising
4. USB connection to computers - allows easy transfer of sounds from computers
5. More filters
6. More memory capacity(128mb)
7. Effects as standard
8. More varied array of internal effects
9. Total of 6 outputs plus digital as standard
10. Compact Flash storage

On the downside, the following XL features are missing from the MPC 1000.

1. Sequencer capacity cut from 300,000 to 100,000
2. No timestretch
3. No MTC sync
4. No SCSI port
5. No way to hook up an external storage device like CDROM or Zip
6. No sample reverse
7. Velocity sensitive attack and decay params are gone (as far as I can see)
8. Using 2000XL programs will only keep basic pad assignment, all other parameters will need to be re-programmed one-by-one.
9. No support for any audio file type except WAV (MPC2000, MPC3000, S1000/3000 need to be converted to WAV first).
10. Programs made on the 1000 will NOT load into an MPC2000XL (sounds will)
11. No tilting screen
12. Can only have 6 outs, not 10 like the XL.

Worth Buying?

If this is to be your first MPC, then yes, it's great value for money. If you intend using commercial sounds with it (sample CDROMs etc) then you'll really need to have a computer as well, otherwise you'll have difficulty getting those sounds into the MPC 1000 - it doesn't have any way of connecting an external storage device, as the USB port can only be used to connect it to a master USB device such as a computer.

If you are an existing MPC2000Xl user, then it's a hard choice. I really don't see this as a replacement for the XL, it's too similar in features (it's basically got an XL operating system). Linking up to a computer is now nice and easy, so that's a plus, but the fact that all your PGMs will need to be re-programmed pad-by-pad is a complete nightmare! If you use sample CDs, the only way you can load the sounds into an MPC 1000 is to copy them to your computer first (if they are in Akai format, they'll have to be converted to WAV). And if you are wanting to share your programs with your friend who has an XL - forget it, they wont work in his machine (WRONG FILE FORMAT is all the XL has to say about this).

If you're trying to decide whether or not to get the MPC 1000 or an MPC 4000, it's not really a fair comparision. The MPC4000 is in a different league - it features a fully fledged sampler, a more robust set of sequencer features, AkSys support, use of external drives, plus dozens of other pro features. Basically these two machines are aimed at very different markets. I think the MPC 1000 will appeal to the live user due to its small size, the MPC 4000 is designed more as a studio workhorse.

NOTE: I personally use the MPC 2000XL as the Center Piece of my Hip Hop and R&B Music Production.

Sequencer, Sampler, Midi Master, ....etc.

If the files you want to load up are standard certified 16 bit WAV files yes you can load them into the MPC and assign them to pads.

The easiest way to do the above is to purchase a program called MPC EDITOR from www.midicase.com

It simulates the MPC environment on a PC so you can easily organize samples / assign them to pads and create programs.

you should get mpd16/trigger finger and reason 3.0 instead of the mpc1000/2000/xl

live4/5(sequencing/timestretching), reason(sound module(s), samplers, drum machine, dr rex (loop player)), mpd16/trigger finger (mpc replacement), sound forge (slice and dice samples), fruity loops 5 (rewire to live) and acid pro 5 (remixes) with a lappy is a very nice setup.

with the purchase of mpd16/trigger finger and reason 3.0 you will save about $300 over the mpc.

live4/5 + reason 3.0 + mpd16/trigger = steak and potatoes

and

sound forge + fruity loops 5 + acid pro 5 = the gravy

yes i am a little hungry
