Newbie here...I'm trippin...all these years I've been doin beats and never knew about this double up trick. I tried it and it changed everything...the whole groove sounds different...snap...now I gotta go back over all my old sh*t and trick it...thanks forum!

By the way, I'm rockin a 2000xl...since the 4000 has a higher resolution, should I get it or do 4000 users use the same double trick anyway?

but, uh, isn't the (relatively) low ppq of the MPCs part of their sought-after feel/timing?
:?

If that's true, why would Linn INCREASE the resolution of the 4000 to 480ppq?

If you're programming a beat that is 85 bpm (R. Kelly's "Bump and Grind", for example), you create a two-bar pattern and set the MPC at 85. Your metronome is set to 1/4 and the quantize is set at either 1/8th or 1/16th.

In a straight pattern, the kick would hit on clicks 1 and 3, the snare hits on clicks 2 and 4. When you double the tempo to 170 bpm, your metronome will (obviously) click twice as fast, but you must program your beat so the kick hits on clicks 1 and 5, snare hits on 3 and 7. In other words, even though the metronome is going faster, you are programming the drums in half-time. When the metronome is turned off, your pattern will sound like the tempo is 85bpm, even though the MPC is playing at 170.

The reason this trick is popular is because the increased resolution causes the MPC's timing to sound tighter, but still "human". In addtion, it's helpful when you're programming busy, intricate hi-hat patterns. The "feel" is noticeably different from the regular way of programming. Personally, I've never had to quantize at anything higher than 1/16ths when I double the tempo.

For those who need it, I hope this helps.

This give your tracks a more Rnb/Radio Feel ala Babyface, Rodney Jerkins, some of Timbos stuff Than say a Street Feel to the drum track(s)
though. I personally Feel that Triplet High Hi hat thing is getting Played out!

Still a Crazy Tip though!!

Changing the time signature from 4/4 to 16/16 or 32/32 has a similar effect.

changeing the time sig wont effect the resolution but if its in8/4 it will be easier to keep track ofwhen you double the tempo

ahh shit ive been doign it double time then slowing it back down. ahaah i thought you were supposed to record in 180 and then bring it back to 90. this is definately a good tip i will check it out tomrrow .

ah i just tested this out with my 303 . it enabled me to do a little more of a swing when i sequenced it in double time. i take back what i said about my 303's sequencing.. hahahaha still gotta try it out with my mpc doe

doubling the tempo is great! for some bizarre reason my drums flow better.
+ we now can work with 1/2 bars instead of 1 bar. Awesome 8)

That's just great. As one of those who had trouble understanding the double resolution trick, what an honor to be called stupid (insert sarcasm here).
