I checked the other day, and my 3000 is running a firmware OS version 3.11. Being that there's been a recent upgrade @ mpc3000.com I believe to 3.16, I was wondering other than the listed improvements on the new version, am I missing anything rockin' 3.11. I ain't the type of cat that feels like I gotta constantly upgrade, but any information is appreciated. I AM ASKING SPECIFICALLY ABOUT DISADVANTAGES TO THE VERSION I AM CURRENTLY USING NOT IMPROVEMENTS OR FEATURES ON THE NEW ONE(S). Thank you.

Wouldn't improvements in the new OS be the exact disadvantages you speak of in the old OS cause you wouldn't have the features of the new OS in the OLD and the OLD can't ever possibly dream of being an advantage over the NEW OS? Why, because it's the NEW has advantages over the OLD OS and those would be disadvantages seeing that they are not included in the OLD OS.

It's an advantage to have them, disadvantage not to have them. correct?
Only upgrade if your production/MPC NEEDS those advantages.

nah man, 3.11 is a decent one, it loads the other OS's from floppy better than all others.

..You are correct in a technical sense. But as is usually the case actual users are aware of bugs or what have you beyond the ones sited in OS updates or negative reports about old ones. I didn't personally see anything in the 3.16 update that made me feel compelled to have to do it immediately. Shit I'm still runnin Protools LE 5.2.1 or whatever on Mac OS 9.2 cause I ain't jumpin through hoops and forkin over change for things that won't assist my workflow. Bout to jump ship on the Protools/Mac thing anyway.

I was more looking for thorn-in-the-side type issues, like how cats say MPC60 or II is butter with 3.10 and you gotta have it. Some people use the old shit and have no problems. Just lookin for a user-to-user heads up. I overthink things sometimes so when I read words on a computer screen, it doesn't always make sense to me off top.

Right on Elmac, you must have snuck that one in simultaneous to my reply to Lampdog. Yeah, off top there's no problem with how it works at all. I'm a simple dude so I'm rockin the floppy drive no external sh*t or nothin' and it couldn't be nicer. I dump most of the audio into Protools, and the 3000 is more or less my main source for drums in my production so hefty storage is not important to me.

look at the 3.16 or 3.14 release notes, it fixes a few bugs and adds the option to clear memory before loading a program (something the 60 had over the 3000).

If I had a 3000 I would have the floppy booting Rohan's OS at all times. All you gotta do is DL it, just do it.

Elm, are you saying other MPC OS have a problem booting from floppy?

For example, 3.03 is not as good at that than 3.11??? Or even 3.14 is not as good at that than 3.11???

I'm curious how you know that..

Cheers,

3.11 in ROM will boot to 3.16 in most cases with all the usual problems associated with floppy disk based, single session, OS boot.

1: Reduced sequencer memory.
2: The pain of booting from floppy.
3: Another bunch of technical issues beyond the nature of this post.

Other than these issues above; Version 3.16 does exactly what it says.

( note: boot any OS from a floppy on an MPC3000 and the point raised above apply ! ). :!:

3.16 in ROM ? That is a different story.

1: Sequencer memory is not reduced. :D
2: Booting is immediate as you would expect from ROM. :D
3: The bunch of technical issues beyond the nature of this post no longer apply. :D

3.16 in ROM has so far satisfied:

1: People who had an older version in ROM ( 3.00, 3.03, 3.08, 3.10 ) and were considering upgrading their machine to 3.11 anyway.

2: People who have removed the floppy drive from their MPC3000 and cant use the floppy disk based, single session, OS boot option any more.

People who have obtained 3.16 in ROM have also had their boot screens heavily customised as an additonal "security/ownership/bragging" feature.

Now ... back to 3.16 on floppy... enjoy the free ride folks !

Thanks all for your interest.

Rohan.

I'll speak here.

FACT: Older versions of the OS in ROM ( << 3.11 ) can/do/might and may have trouble booting to newer system versions from a floppy disk.

Example based on MANY direct communications with other users and tests in my development machine.

3.00 to 3.11/3.12/3.14B/3.14/3.16 on floppy = :-(
3.03 to 3.11/3.12/3.14B/3.14/3.16 on floppy = :-(
3.08 to 3.11/3.12/3.14B/3.14/3.16 on floppy = mixed results.
3.10 to 3.11/3.12/3.14B/3.14/3.16 on floppy = mixed results.
3.11 to 3.11/3.12/3.14B/3.14/3.16 = no problem

Rohan.
