the verdict is go buy an MPC60 on eBay.

Can we have the REAL VERDICT now? What did they say? The magazine isn't here yet in the US. One thing is for sure...with the MPC1000 on the cover of Future Music it is going to get a lot of attention.

considering that magazine is written from a euro techno perspective guy i think theyll like its interactivity with the computer, cheap price (they bitched about the Z4/Z8 and 4000, cos "why would you want a MPC or outboard sampler in 2002 when you can have Cubase/Kontakt" type of argument), and its clean (weak) sound. watch.

damn blokes.

dont be so pessimistic. if you dont like the mpc1000 before you even played around with one or read any reaview then thats just your own opinion. if you are so narrow minded and think the only people who can write a proper review are in the usa, then wait until an american magazine writes about it and stop complaining before you even read anything!!

Okay, I just forced myself to buy Future Music (it really is a piece of junk)

First off, I could have written a better review than that, and I've never even touched one of the things!

Basically, 95% of the review is a rehash of the tech spec off Akai's web site, and also a rehash of their previous MPC2000XL review. So basically, nothing really to report there.

They seem to focus on the live uses of this unit, it's portability, but remember that the MPC1000 is NOT battery operated, so it's not portable in a 'sitting on the bus writing a tune on my headphones' kind of way.

It explains the use of the USB port:

Swtich your MPC into transfer mode
connect up the MPC1000 via USB to your computer
your MPC1000 appears as a removable drive in your computer
drag and drop files into the removable drive
files are transferred to the compact flash card.

Note that once you have done this, in order to continue using your MPC, you have to leave USB transfer mode - hence you can't really keep moving seemlessless between loading sounds and editing them.

Effects are apparently very good - just not enough of them. the compressor and eq work well. Filters are nice

No AkSys support yet.

The unit this guy used had a lot of bugs (associated with all the 'new' features like the USB functionality and Q-link sliders) which he reckons were solved by an OS update Akai sent him. and I quote "I have been assured by Akai that the bugs will 'of course' be non-existant in the final release"

Well, of course - just like they've fixed all the remaining bugs in the XL...! (I wonder if these got carried over into the MPC1000?)

He reckons it sounds FAT - although judging by the free hip hop samples CD that came with the magazine, their definition of fat is a lot different to ours!

There was no mention of the backward compatibility issues that have been bugging me, in fact no mention of file formats in the review at all.

All in all, the guy loved it.

At this stage, I'm still sticking by my opinion - great product for new users, but if you have an XL already you'll need to think long and hard about the real reasons why you think you need one (as opposed to just wanting it out of gear lust!).

MPC Tutor hit it on the head.
I subscribe to FM (mainly to get some sample cd's) and I read the review also. What I got out of the review was that the 1000 is good only if you don't have the money to get a real MPC (60, 2K, 3K, 4k) and just need something to start out on.
To me, it's something you'd want to give your kid brother for his 16th birthday to play on so he doesn't mess with your MPC.

" Future Music (it really is a piece of junk) "

I agree. I consider it a `scene rag`.

"ALOT of peeps will get it just outta "GEAR LUST" as you said."

That is why most of us bought the MPC60, MPC3000, MPC2000, MPC2000XL or MPC4000 (including me). If it was not for gear lust then the MPC lineage would have died long ago. I encourage gear lust even if it is someone else doing it.

mpc3000,

I hear you on that one. I did the same thing. And I would do it all over again. I would buy each of them again without hesitation.

Yes, I am getting the MPC1000, MPC2500, MPC2500XL, and whatever comes after that. Long live gear lust.

I'm a reformed gear-lust addict, and it cost me a lot of money unecessarily. These days, I don't buy anything unless I know I have a true need for it. Buying a sampler with a feature set that is 95% identical to my existing one (which is in perfect working order) doesn't make sense to me. MPC4000 - yes as it's definitely an upgrade. I am also a firm believer in making do with what you have - if I can't make music with an MPC2000XL, a DPS16, various synths, guitars, compressors and computer software, I might as well give up :)

Sounds like the bulk of you are trying to justify your purchases on the 2k, 3k, and 4k. If you do not like the product that is one thing, but realize this...it is in fact the next generation MPC and I do not think it would be a gift for your 16 year old brother. Since it has virtually the same features as the MPC 2000XL and some upgrades your statments about it being a piece of sh*$...Does not say very much for all of the MPC2000XL owners.

It is a smaller scale MPC 2000/2000XL with the updated software (from what I have read) and some upgraded features.

You guys seem to know alot about a product that no one (not very many) people have ever seen.

I am new to this forum and I am trying to gather as much info as I can before I purchase something. I was hoping to use this forum to learn about the products for first hand users.

There is a lot of great info up on this forum, thanks for all of those with the meaningful posts...
