hey djartwork. maybe you should not post the same thing 3 times..... just an idea.
anyway, i have to agree with you. the mpc1000 is a new machine and does have feature which the mpc2000 doesnt have. also, its quite a bit smaller (for me that is an important factor).
the functions which are left out in comparison to the 2000 are not really important. first there is no time stretch but this function is difficult to use on the 2000 and the wuality is bad. every pc program can do better in less time. also, the reverse function (which some people on this board seem to find very important) is such a small feature for me. again, this can be done easily with a pc sound editor like soundforge, cooledit or wavelab.
there obviously are still people out there not using a computer but i dont think there are many left. also, you will end up anyway hooking up your mpc to a pc for something (no matter if you have the 2000 or the 1000) so why not do some editing on the pc, too (which is done easier there anyway) and use the mpc for what it is best: programming beats and playing your sounds live on the pads.
think about it: it would be very sad if akai didnt give the mpc1000 more features than the 2000. that would mean that their technology is not advancing at all. yeah, if you have a 2000 then the features in the 1000 not justify to buy a new onew (unless size matters a lot) but the 1000 will be the better machine from my point of view.

An absence of extra features does not mean that at all. It means AKAI is adding to their product line, not replacing it. The MPC1000 is a portable MPC. It is not made for editing because it is a performer's MPC. Sample editing isn't done while you are at a gig.
Software complements the MPC line. Sound Forge, Adobe Audtion (which replaced Cool Edit Pro), Wavelab, and others can assist your MPC usage.
As near as anyone can tell, the MPC2000XL will be replaced by the MPC2500 next year. Eventually the MPC1000 might be replaced by the MPC1000XL.

I'm interested to know - do people actually consider the MPC2000XL as NOT portable?

AKAI figures it isn't portable. It is somewhat large. Ever use one on the subway train? How about while flying on the Concorde? I guess we'll never get to try the MPC1000 on an SST flight to London.
zzounds began listing an MPC2000XL soft case for sale just recently. What is this thing? It's a new item and there is no photo. I wouldn't want to carry the MPC2000XL in anything but a reinforced case.

besides the fact that i could never concentrate on a plane or train and would def feel a little nerdy and uncomfortable doing it, where i live youd probably get robbed for it. BUT people out here truck their mpc2000s all over the place, put em in the trunk, take em from one house to another. to the studio if they can get in. now could you do that with the 4000 or 60...hell no. so in that respect its portable.

Never used an mpc2000xl or the mpc3000le on the train, but hey, I don't know where you're from mpc_producer, over here you can't plug your mpc for some power travelling by train. So even if you have an mpc1000, you still can't use it in a train...

Well, you can move it. It's not the biggest thing in the world. I would not classify it as a "portable" unit. I mean, I can move my computer around but my laptop is "portable".

If it's in a case, it will not qualify as a "carry on" on a plane.......and you will have to check it in and hope that the gorillas that toss the baggage around won't kill your MPC. (I've done it, but I'd rather travel with a smaller MPC under my own custody.)

Sounds like the bulk of you are trying to justify your purchases on the 2k, 3k, and 4k.
True indeed. Its like paying $3,000 for a car then finding out that you couldve payed $1,500 for a car thats more advanced. Thats no laughing matter at all. But like I said on a previous post, if your a dope producer it dont matter if you pay $3,000 for a mpc 3000 cause all that money will come back to you after you sell like 2 scraps(beats) for 15 hundred a piece. and if your dr.dre then its like $100,000 per beat.
