hardcore newbie question - akai and digi 001 questioni

I'm sorry in advanced for such an obviously stupid question but...
I have a Digi 001 and Akai Mpc 2000xl -
do i have to plug in the midi cables?
are the stereo outs and record ins on the mpc going into the 001?
if so which are the correct connections in 001 to go in to?

I also LOOKED at the plugs, got the plugs and connectors that go to those plugs and hooked them up.

Midi, if you wann be in midi sync with your software program then yes.

I could not figure out how to get pro tools to
recognize my MPC as the slave for awhile
and then one day i figured it out
and realized having the mpc as midi tracks
in pro tools
does not allow me to put effects on individual sounds
making me not able to dub out my beats how i like
So
I decided i have no use for Midi
Maybe im missing some other use
for this kind of hook up?

That's because the SAMPLES travel via audio cable
and you were trying to put effects on MIDI tracks when there was
no audio, just midi. NO audio travels on midi cables, only data.

You can't put and effects on something that is not there right.

so what is the advantage of using the MPC and Pro tools
via midi?
Other than being able to switch threw different drum kits


Personally
I dont like the fact that if you have a tune
in pro tools
with a midi track that was created by the MPC
you need to have your MPC on and loaded with that
specific kit
I prefer to dump 8 tracks of audio to pro tools
from the MPC
Then i can pretend to be King Tubby
and put echo on snares and hi hats and shit
I find midi a useless tool
in terms of multi track recording

Having midi connected between your MPC & Pro Tools allows you to use each sequencer in tandem with the other. This will allow you to sync each track from your MPC to Pro Tools.

For instance, let's say you have 30 tracks of sequences on your MPC and you wanna record each track as a separate sound into Pro Tools. The Digi 001 only has 8 analog inputs. That leaves 22 tracks unrecorded. But, using Midi Time Code or Midi Beat Clock, you can sync the MPC so that it is perfectly in time with Pro Tools and you can easily record all of the other tracks 8 at a time if you wish.
