Problem with my SP1200

I know some heads on here have SP's and I can't really find a dedciated forum like this one so......

Bascially bought an SP off ebay a while ago, but its only now I've come to use I seem to be having a problem:

I connect one single output of my DJ mixer into the sample input, using 1/4" unbalanced lead and connect headphones to mix out. I can hear signal OK but albeit a bit quiet, then I hit the red sample button and I get loads of distortion....?

Tried different things: connecting portable ttable instead diff cables diff gain settings doesn't seem to make any difference? This has to got to be a setting somewhere in can't just work normally then spaz up when you just press sample

is the distortion like sample overload..or like really feedback loop?

Because the SP only has one input! I can't see it being a feedback loop really unless you can't monitor on the mix out while sampling? Its similar on the S950 I think

It may seem crazy, but there's nothing wrong with your SP.
That's just how the SP is.

There's no input monitor while you're sampling.

....and yeah, it makes a weird compressed, fuzzy, distortion noise while you're in sample mode.

You're supposed to monitor from the sample source (like your DJ mixer) when sampling.

However, if you have money to burn, I've heard that Forat does a modification for the SP that will remedy that quirk.

Maybe you could find someone in the UK that could do that mod for you(?)

on the S950 you can monitor through the sampler..

There is an option on the 950 to turn monitor on/off for shure.

yeah with the 950 your monitor is only thru the mono output I believe..! I just always monitor from the source and watch the meters on the 950.

A word of advice:

YOU CAN NOT MONITOR A SIGNAL GOING THROUGH THE SP-1200. You must play it back and listen to it through your mixing console. I believe that is the distortion you're hearing.

TRY to pay attention to your GAIN INPUT. Make sure it is nearly peaking out, sample/record, then play it back as i've said and let us know if you're still experiencing a problem.

Rather than start a new thread I have another SP related Q:

Is it possible to take one sample 10.5 seconds longon the SP1200?
According to the manual this can't be done: only 2.5 seconds per pad. I swear I've read someone sample longer than that though. Or is the only way to have to play the record your sampling at a faster speed and pitch down?

ALL SP12's AND 1200's HAD THIS, IF YOU WANNA CALL IT, PROBLEM.

Unfortunately, you only have 2.5 seconds per pad. But check this out, you can copy the same sound(a pad) to all of the other pads on the SP12. Try it.
