SP12'S ??????????????????????

Does anyone know if you can take the ordinary sp12 (NOT TURBO) and update it so you get max sampling time? or is the turbo a completley different machine? tried to find out on the net, but it was unclear....

You sure can.....In fact, the TURBO attribute of an SP-12 Turbo is as simple as upgrading its internal memory.

you will find a 12turbo easier than the upgrade. and considering they dont cost that much its an easier route. start lookin for lots of 5.25 too. n drum that shit is nasty i thought it was a sp12 link

i'm lookin at a normail sp12, and its about £150, that's cheap!
But the sp12 turbos usually go for a lot more...when u say the upgrade is hard to get, how hard is it ?

A fact about the Turbo upgrade for those who need reminding, don't know any better or have not read the TURBO UPGRADE install documents.

...and some stories from my bench this weekend.

2 x SP12 TURBO

1 with OS 2.4 ( Loony Tunes World Series 85 Model )

1 with OS 2.6 ( What's his name memorial model )

1 x SP12 STANDARD

With OS 2.5 ( yes ... an OS not listed on the Emulator Archive ).

The TURBO upgrade is a combination of:

RAM ( quite a few old school RAM chips for expanding the SAMPLE and SEQUENCE memory )

ROM ( containing the TURBO OS )

and ...

A custom Programmable Logic Array ( PAL ) chip for decoding the extra RAM added during the TURBO upgrade.

RAM an ROM components are easy to source.

The PAL is security fused and difficult to dump and clone unless you're a skilled hacker.

My suggestion

Purchase a TURBO UPGRADED SP12 and save your self the hassle of trying to source an upgrade.

PS: Both SP12 TURBO machines are now running at version 2.6. One has had just about every Tantalum and Electrolytic capacitor replaced. One has had it's boot screen hacked. All have had their memory batteries changed. One had its AD chip changed. They are all VERY groovy !!!

I think you are missing the big point.

A SP turbo kit isn't something you can create and it's not something you will find for sale.

If by some chance you were able to find one for sale it would cost you a lot more than the difference in price between buying a SP12 turbo and what a SP12 would cost.

Unlike most used old or discontinued items the SP turbo kits were never just floating around, they were either installed in units or still in EMU stock.
The EMU stock got depleated after the release of the SP1200 when SP12's became and cheaper option than the 1200.
This in turn led people to purchase the kits from EMU for the SP12's they were buying used.

yes, i believe what you are saying is that turbo upgrade kits are freely available and inexpensive. is that correct?

no. he is saying that the turbo kits are very hard to get a hold of so you are better off getting a sp12 turbo with it allready installed. to find the turbo kit itself though is very hard to do.

Save up for an SP1200 and catch one cheap on eBay. The turbo's go fro around 500 and you can get an SP 1200 on a good day for around 750, worth the extra 250 as you could get back twice that if you decided to flip the 1200........ Trust mah
