As for the MC-303, it is worlds apart from the MC-909. Here there is a fair comparison. The MC-909 is easily ten times better than the older MC-303.
You have to decide whether the MC-909 or the MPC1000 fits your style of music and the way you work. Just making a broad request and generalized replies about these two machines isn't going to help anyone. This is an MPC website and the forum members will be biased towards that recommendation.

And true, they are so different that it's hard to compare the two. Maybe ask yourself this question: do you prefer realtime banging on pads and listening, or do you want an x0x-style sequencer with more visual feedback. I know you can do realtime on the 909 but the way the pads are layed out make each machine more suitable for either style...
If I was doing trance or house I might be more interested in the 909, for the realtime control, synth functions and x0x-style sequencer. But for the sample-based hiphop I make, nothing beats the empeecee... All IMHO, my personal views ofcourse.
