doesn't Soundforge have some feature where you can go 12bit and lower? I don't have it, but I've heard of it being done before.

Man, if it's that important to you to get the SP sound to the point where you're "willing to work at it down to [your] last breath"..........

Why not just buy a SP !?!

You can either sync it up with MIDI Clock........or you can sample your sounds into the SP first, then re-sample into your 4000, so you have more sequencer control.
That's how I use my SP.

1. Bit Rate (Some Also used Lower kHz Resolution 22 etc)
2. A/D Converters
3. Non-Variable Filters
Lowering the Bits only Handles 1 Part of Like A 3 PART ISSUE...........

..just to add to these main points: The SP machines also has incredible snappy VCAs. Never underestimate the importance of VCAs over their digital equivalents (MPC4000 etc etc).

Also, regarding the SP's legendary SSM2044 filters. On outs 3&4 and 5&6 they have set cutoff, pair 5&6 wider than 3&4. But dont forget that the outs 1 and 2 had a simple fixed AR (attack/release) envelope on the filter with about a 5ms attack, slower release. This filter is the most closed but is the one that a lot of user put little loops etc through because of the cool little AR filter envelope.

So, there really are dozens of reasons for the SP machines unique sound. In summary to the question that seems to come up every week:

Question: Can I get an SP sound by re-sampling on my MPC4000 at 12 bit?
Answer: No!!!

But it IS FAR MORE THAN 12bit Sampling...........
I REALLY DID STATE THE MAIN ONES because I KNOW OF MANY Who Sample their Samples Through the SP And Then DONT TOUCH IT AT ALL
and For most this is the sound they are lookin for and this Primarilly comes through the converter and the Non-Variable filter................

AND NOW GO SAMPLE AND HAVE MUCH FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The SP does have a specil sound to it that seperates if from other samplers. Sure sounds different than my 60, an 30 and the're both 12bit. I couldn't tell you why it does this, but the SP will always have a special spot in my heart. I like the variable sampling rates on the S950 though...you can work some magic with that feature.

I KNOW U KNOW UR SAMPLERS and Sampling But TRUST ME THIS is the REASON: I Stated this Above

THE BOTTOM LINE.......................................

OLDER SAMPLERz NOT ONLY SAMPLED at LOW BIT RATES (8, 10, 12) but Had Better Sounding A/D Converters ALSO WHAT IS NOT OFTEN MENTIONED IS these low bit rate samplers often had a NON -VARIABLE FILTER on their input to compensate for their limited banwidth and those 3 REASONS Cause those samples not to sound like other samples ...........................................

1. Bit Rate (Some Also used Lower kHz Resolution 22 etc)

2. A/D Converters

3. Non-Variable Filters

The SP1200 is the most distinctive sounding sampler I've ever heard, and it's hard to emulate with other gear, as I've described above.

i've posted this before, but i've learned how to get a DAMN close sp1200.

dx plugin - hyperprism sonic decimator (after compression on the drums)...

i've tricked people into thinking i've used an sp1200 when all i use is a mpc1000 and reason.

mpc4000 will back me up on this. it sounds DAMN close.

i for one love the sp1200 sound, but only as an effect that i would like to control. it's a beautiful grittiness, one of the most pleasing distortions ever digitally created.

as a non-drummer who has been quoted as "the most syncopated muhfukker" i highly recommend this procedure on your kicks and snares - not to mention basslines (after being recorded via spdif).
