need help with MULTI TRACK RECORDING (mpc to cool edit pro)

hi,

i'm trying to record my sequence on my mpc to my computer (cool edit pro) track by track. that is, i want a seperate track for the snares, a seperate one for the hi hats, synths, etc....i just went out and bought the 8-cable snake (connects from mixing board to 8 outs on the mpc) for this...

but it's not working.....whenever i record, the whole beat is recorded (not each individual track) can someone help get me up and running?

if it'll help describe my problem, my set-up is currently like this: mpc 2000xl and roland xv-3080 > mixer (mackie cr1604) > tascam us-122 (soundcard) to my laptop and midi'd up to the mpc (and i think everything is connected properly, 8 output of the mpc are going to the channel inputs on mixer......both mpc and roland xv are connected to mixer "aux return to master" and soundcard (tascam) is connected to mixer "bus insert".....there are meters for all my equipment indicating that signals are being recieved)

by the way, does this have anything to do with setting up SMPTE? if so, how would i set that up with the mpc and cool edit pro??

Crap, there is so much bad news in that post I would even know where to begin. Maybe instead of evaluating all what is wrong with your particular setup, you should concentrate on conceptual issues.

CEP does not record sequences, it records audio.

Even though the MPC is sending 8 separated audio signals, what happens to those signals in the mixer?

Define mixer.

How many cables do you have running to audio inputs on your PC soundcard? Even though I know nothing about the Tascam, I suspect you have a grand total of 2.

If that sound card does NOT have 8-Inputs then what you are trying to do will *NOT* happen.

There is a thread about recording individual tracks. But it is regarding an MPC with 2-outs.

The only way I can see this working is by muting each of the 8 tracks one at a time and recording each track one at a time. Using MTC to line them up as explained in the thread I mentioned.

mpc 3000: yeah the soundcard only has 2 inputs....but the guy who sold me the snake at guitar center told me i could basically have my mpc record 2 tracks of audio at a time (he told me that is what SMPTE does, it coordinates the tracking/recording process of the mpc so i can sync/record tracks).....he also told me i could control what tracks are being recorded with the mixer

are you saying there's something wrong with my setup? (are you saying the 8 seperated audio signals sent to my mixer isn't recognized by my computer? the volume bar on cool edit jumps when i play the sequence and i'm able to record it.....but i just can't record with the instruments all on different tracks like i have it set up in my mpc)

is the problem cool edit pro? i thought you could multi-track with cool edit.....what is a program i'm supposed to be using?

You basically solved your own problem when you said:

There is nothing else for me to add.

Cool edit pro is a true multitracking progam. I have an Audigy soundcard so I can't simultaneously record more than two track. But my cousin has ezbus with the ez8 adat card and he can record 8 tracks all at once. See what the flu can do to you? I missed a good portion of this thread.

Yeah, 2 at a time. Mute the other 6 and record 2. Then the other 2 and so on.

yeah they are recognized by your computer. But tell me this, how is the computer going to strip 8 individual tracks that have been mixed down to 2. If you figure this out you will be a millionaire.

Of course it jumps. Its receiving a signal is it not? The signal coming out of the back of your mixer.

it is a multitrack program. Can handle a whopping 64 tracks or even more.
