Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By slickslack Fri Nov 18, 2005 4:40 pm
I have been sloggin thru the archives looking at all the card reader posts and guides and reading all the suggestions and I wanted to make sure I get this right.

If I want to get a MULTI (CF, Smart card, Memory Stick) card reader, like the USB one that I have for my cameras and Macs, for my MPC2kClassic I could get one of the internal SCSI ones and put it in an external SCSI box, right?

All the external SCSI card readers I can find are PCMCIA only. I have cards in 3 formats cause I have owned a bunch of digital cameras over the last few years for work so having a multi card reader on the MPC would make life much easier.

thanks and suggestions on reader/box combos welcome.

This has been mentioned before and you are correct you need a scsi card reader. www.midicase.com lists compatible drives. There are a number of microtech models which are suitable.

you'll need an external card reader. the 2000 classic does not have an internal scsi port like the xl.

check this link for more info on card readers....keep in mind this is mostly xl stuff, but good info.

if the only readers you can find are pcmcia, you can buy an adaptor at any computer store that allows you to read compact flash cards through the pcmcia slot. I use one with my reader on the xl. they only run about $15. they look like this.....

Internal IDE port on 2kxl NOT 2k.

so...

Can I put an IDE drive in an external drive box with a SCSI bridge in it, which is what the midicase guide hints at but I'm not too clear on this point. Does it have to be a SCSI internal in a SCSI box or can I put an IDE drive with a SCSI bridge in a SCSI box? Wha? sputter...!

Sometimes I think the FORAT mod would be worth it just because it would remove any external parts and SCSI cables and make the 2k more easily portable like it was when I still used floppys.I liked it when I could unplug MIDI and audio, sit on the sofa with headphones and bash stuff out. Plus it would fit in a smaller case which would be a big plus.

[rant]It's hard to describe how much I hate still looking at the ZIP drive right now, not to mention the still working Syquest EZ drive that has a duplicate of everything on the ZIP disks for safety. I have at least three zip drives(acquired from work) but you can only use one at a time on the MPC because of that stupid SCSI id switch. At least the Syquest let you choose any ID not just 5 or 6. [/rant]

thanks again if anyone can clarify my muddification...

look everybody cardreader is not hard to install when you order product #3 the only thing you would need is product #1,2 or like on #4 the steps to install cardreader,he said you can also take from and old computer.

I ORDER MY CARD READER FROM #3, WHEN TO COMPUSA AND GOT MY IDE HARDDRIVE CABLE AND POWER CABLE, LIKE ON #1,2 AND FOLLOW THE STEPS ON #4,MAYBE I MIGHT DO A VIDEO ON INSTALLING THE CARD READER 8) YES I DO HAVE A 2000XL

Yeah man, too many ask and don't read, then when they DO read they ask more and still don't DO IT.

Yeah thanks but... my question pertains to a MPC2000 Classic for which none of those products will work. At least not without putting them in an external box with a SCSI bridge of some sort. That is what I am trying to clear up before I go ordering from the net.

And yes Lampdog, I have read almost everything I could find on the issue and as I said before I think I need some clarification on the IDE in a SCSI box vs SCSI in a SCSI box issue.

Is there anyone out there who could add to this without refering to how easy it is on an XL?

LOOK THE LASTES OS 1.72 DOES NOT SUPPORT MULT CARD READER ONLY THE XL, YOU CAN STILL TRY BUT YOU WILL BE WASTING YOUR MONEY WITH THE SCSI CARD READERS OR WHAT EVER YOUR TRYING TO DO IT WANT WORK,ONLY THE SCSI ZIP OR INTERNAL ZIP BY FORAT WILL DO YOU BEST.

"phatz" claims ot have done it w/ 2k classic and scsi internal, pm him or do a search and find his thread. It's OLD though.

External SCSI card readers are actually an internal card reader in a $5 box with a connector and power supply. This is a good option for MPC2000 owners as this model has no internal SCSI (without expensive modifications). If you get an external card reader, you can use it as is for any model.

That quote is from the much linked midicase guide to card reader installation. It's the reason I asked the question in the first place. It would seem to contradict what wildstyle72 just said about the operating systems.

Yes I know that Forat can do it (see my earlier post) but it's US$300 not including shipping there and back. So clearly this ain't all cut and dry. I'll ask Forat about the OS issue though.

Is there anyone with an external SCSI card reader on a 2K classic?

Lampdog, I'll look up that post, thanks for the tip.

If I may restate the sitch for clarity sake..
1 I would like to get an internal style card reader, because the basic external SCSI card readers are expensive huge and limited.
2 put it in an external drive box (as the midicase guide seems to indicate)
3 hook it up via SCSI to a MPC2000Classic( NOT an XL)
4 Throw the f'n ZIP drives off top of the CN tower here in tha T-DOT.

Me personally, I'd follow the midicase.dom guide.

You, you do what you feel is right.

When I figure this out I'll post it here so that others with MPC2000s(non XL) can learn what I have learnt.

(How many of the original versions are there out there anyway?)

this is exactly what I was mentioning in my first post.

Dcypher,
Do you have any info on putting an IDE drive in a SCSI box or does it have to be a SCSI drive in a SCSI box. You can get IDE to SCSI bridges but I have no idea if they would work. This has been the point of my whole quest as the IDE drives tend to be better designed and smaller.
