alternating velocities on notes (not in step edit)

When your record a high hat track. I want to have alternating velocies on every other note. for example. high hat one (127) highhat two( 117) than the next one at (127) and so on. I know u can do this in step edit but that takes forever.


I read somewhere I think on mpc2000xl.com that u could program tha hats to do this automatically in the velocity screen by multiplying the percentage in the velocity changes between notes, High hat one played at 127 originally and hat two hit at 117 originally so u take the difference which is 10 and multiply by 15 so u get %150. So when I go and set the new values all it does is lower the velocity on every note equally.

What am I doing wrong?

hmm....i thougth you could choose which note it would affect or maybe i'm thinking of something else, it's been some time since i used the 2kxl

Can't you just use the note variation for that while you real time record?
That would work right?

If It did it wouldnt be accurate since u would be doin it manually trying to stop the slider at the correct location.

But once you get it in a somewhat accurate area you could always step edit.I don't know exactly,just tryin' to help.

just lay down your hats in the right place then hit 16 levels Volocity and go back over and fix the volocity it took me about minute to do what your saying using this method. hope this solves you problem..

i would use 16 levels -> velocity to do it. works fine! if you have your tempo set to a high level, like around 150-200bpm you should get a real good resolution. and the swing you can get from that is amazing. so if you combine the tempo with 16 levels you can make some tight hihat or even tambourine loops....

Yeah 16 levels works I know that but i realy wanted to figure out how to use it the way like how I explained. I wanna learn this feature with the percentages. I gues know one used it before. hanks for the input though

'AFTER' button is your friend. Use it with the NV fader. Overdub+play the hi hat track and use the fader to change velocity.

Since you dont wanna use step edit:

You program your first two hihats with velocity 127 and the other 117.

Next go to EDIT->EVENTS

Choose the time that covers the first two hihat notes

Next, change the start time to the next note after the second hihat

Then, choose the number of time to repeat...

And there it is....

you could do it that way but it would take longer. unecessary time

Too much accuracy in your hi hats doesn't really sound good if you actually listen but anyway.
There is no reason why you shouldn't be able to use the NV Slider and still get your notes within a +/- 5 range of a given velocity value.
If you can't I would say you just need to practice using it more, it not hard to do at all.
However in your case you aren't going for hi hats that sound good just ojnes that are different every other hit so to get that tired sound just do this;
-Assign the hi hat to 2 differnt pads
-program the hi hats using the alternating pads...PD1/PD2/PD1/PD2......etc
-go to EDIT select VELOCITY then select PD1 and set the hits for PD1 to 127, next select PD2 and set the hits for PD2 to 117.
Similar to what DMAXJ was saying but faster since it on 2 different pads.

Still I would use the NV Slider, it will give you much better results with practice.
Oh and you do know that you can set the range of change on the NV Slider right???
