Does the 1k sound the same as a 2k classic, or even an XL?

that's not a bad idea..i hadnt considered it! but it would not work, for several reasons, and here's why

-id get latency monitoring spdif thru my soundcard (a MOTU box). as in, hit a pad and i dont know 300ms later i hear a fart sample or whatever it is im playing with

-i like the thick quality of the analog ouputs and id miss it if it were not there (i forget what thread i just wrote this in, but i went from an xl back to a 1k for that reason)

-a big reason i use an mpc is so that i am not using a computer to write. i love computers and am really comfortable with them but i dont like writing music on them. so spdif monitoring, at least in my setup, would involve a computer.

but thanks for the idea, good to keep an open mind!

you could also get an digital to analog converter box, i think behringer do a nice cheap one. you shouldn't get latency with that!! hope this helps

first you have to listen and look at the DSP chip in the machines. The 3000
has the thicker sound than any of the machines including the 4000. I had the 2000xl and the 1k , but their both close in similar ways (sounds) work around? 1k surpasses the 2000xl by far, transfering sounds from 1k to PC

it has to do with the analog outs are colored a certain way. so what happens is, when i record the 1k thru the digital out, all of a sudden im not hearing the beat i did anymore. cuz then it's colored a totally different way.

The difference you are hearing is probably not a difference in the outputs of the MPC, but rather a difference between the internal D/A converter in the MPC (when using the analog outs), and whatever other D/A converter you are using (when using the SPDIF out).

yes, absolutely. i am aware of that.

all these boxes are colored differently, even though they try not to be! like a lavry D/A box is gonna sound different than the digidesign stuff, etc
