yep. i think that function is called an atenuator.

attenuation means reducing the volume on a channel. look at your mixer if you have one, the channels may be marked top down from 0 to -infinity. as you move the fader down, the mixer is attenuating the signal on that channel. some mixers also have the option to overdrive the volume, so the 0 mark will be part way down the fader's travel.

Yeah, I've seen Direct Input used more often, but "Direct Injection" always sounded better rolling off of my tongue. :)
