I currently do not have an MPC but i am soon going to get one. However i am stuck in a dillema. I have a budget of around £950. Is it more worthwhile buying the MPC1000 with money left to possibly spend on the microKORG synth, Or, Spend the whole lot on an MPC2500? Advice PLEASE.
Also i was wondering if with newly brought MPC1000'S does the new update come pre-installed?
Thanks in advance.

i'd go for the mpc1k and the mircrokorg, that would be dope.
the mpc1k is pretty close to a 2500 but the 2500 isn't anywhere near a microkorg, so i think you'd get much more boom bap for your buck with the mpc1k+microkorg!
I dunno if the new os comes pre-installed, probably on the black ones.

if ya need 'real' v.a. sound, get the micro.
if you are full of vintage synth sample cdz, no.
you know what you want to do.

Neither MPC will work well as a synth. The lack of envelopes and crossfade thingies, means that only the 4k is designed for advanced synthesis. So if you need a synth, budget for it.

The 1k plus Microkorg would make a great studio combo I think, lots of people use those 2 together. I use the MPC 1k with the Waldorf Q which is kind of a similar setup.

ONce you get deeper into the machines, you're propbably going to want another sampler, whether you use the 1k or 2.5k. At least, if you want to do deep sound design stuff, that only a soft sampler, or a ASR/E-mu type sampler would do. So keep in mind, no MPC is the be-all-end-all sampler, then decide which is the one for you.

depends on your style of music

if you are 'old school 100% sample based hip hop purist' then maybe the 2500...

otherwise get the 1k plus synth.

personally i love synths so Id get 1k plus synth.
(my setup is 1k plus machinedrum plus 5 or 6 synths.)

I am well into making hip hop but i want a versatile setup really, one that will suit other types of music also. What would you suggest?

mpc1000, effects box for transitions, and some kind of sound module (or synth). i suggest reason.

samples are a must, too, of course. use records like sound modules.

i would say if that really is your budget cap,
and if you are into other styles of electronic music such as house, techno, jungle etc. etc., then go 1k plus a synth.
That way you will be experiencing the 2 main techniques of electronic music (sampling and synthesis) instead of just 1.

otoh If I listen to some old KRS-1 or something, I don't hear a lot of 'electronica' sounds on that, u know. So if that was your focus then maybe you don't need the synth.

For me I do a lot of electronic/dance stuff so i could never be satisfied without a 'real' synthesizer; its more fun editing your own sounds than just sampling other peoples synth sounds.

Also d_loc is correct that neither 1k nor 2500 are 'ultimate' samplers anyway in the long run.

Making sense?

ps. u might consider "ion" or ms2000 or something vintage as alternative to the microkorg.

just curious.... why would you say that, when in OS they are 98% identical. ok well 95%, same sample engine. there are more physical differences than software

Maybe the thing I just posted above would make it more clear?

I'm just saying, I don't hear a lot of synth tweaking in old-school hip hop music and someone who really wanted to go the '2 turntables and mpc, nothing else' route might think the 2500 was worth it just for the better pad feel.

I'm not about to argue with you that the 1k does 90% of what 2500 can do, I'm totally satisfied with my 1k.

larger/different pads,

beat slicing includes an auto-hit-detect i think...
easier way of recording a long 'live' sample and putting it into the track
more midi ports on the back,
a couple of extra knobs and data entry buttons to make life easier??
cd drive/burning options,

...??

personally i wouldn't care about much of that except for the different pads.
i have tried mpc2000xl in the store and it definitely felt different from the 1k pads.
