Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By Amaysn Fri Mar 10, 2006 10:35 pm
There are instructions on adding a hard drive to the MPC2000XL located at the folling url:

http://www.mpc2000xl.com/Internalhd.htm

This installation requires the following

1. SCSI to IDC50
2. IDE to SCSI converter
3. IDE Hard Drive

My question is whether the new Akai HDM10 hard drive kit for the MPC1000 will work with an MPC2000XL? If so, what else besides the hard drive is needed? I have seen only one pic of the HDM10 and I cannot make out the connection.

I searched the forum and did not see a previous post on this topic. If I missed one, sorry - I'm new.

Thanks

midicase.com

has answers..

Lampdog, thanks for replying.

Actually, the link that I posted is from the site that is recomended by midicase.com. I did not find anything there about the new hardrive kit - just what was available before it came out. They do recomend a mailing list. So I will check that out also.

That connector on the outside of the drive (small black) looks
scsi2 similiar to the scsi2 on the back of mpc2kxl type of connector.

That hdm10 "shape" of (scsi2?) connector is not inside the 2kxl.

This is a quote from the site mentioned above about the MPC2000XL:

"A hard drive could only be connected to the SCSI connection, since the IDE port does not recognize hard drives (only removable drives). I wanted to use a laptop drive since they are low in heat generating. So I need to go from 2.5" IDE drive to 50 pin SCSI. "

So it would seem that the XL has a 50 pin SCSI connection inside (female? male?). I saw a picture of the SCSI connection inside the XL earlier while checking on this subject - not sure where though.

So the questions are:

1. IS there a conversion between the XLs internal SCSI connector and the new AKAI kit?

2. Also, if there is a converter (adaptor), will it work with the XLs operating system?

3. Is a laptop HD necessary, or could a regular drive be used?

It's a SCSI 50 pin male connector on the MPC circuit board.

The regular sized hard drive wouldn't be a good idea only because of the heat generated from the HD itself and there really isn't enough room to properly fit a standard HD in the MPC.
I was going to install a laptop hard drive in mine but got too confusing with the IDE to SCSI bridges; the terminators for SCSI (I got a Microtech SCSI card reader installed and an external SCSI cd reader also); and just trying to mount the laptop HD so it can get some air to cool it.

I decided to go with the PCMCIA hard drive and insert through my card reader. Plus it's easier to swap out the PCMCIA HD from the MPC to my laptop to tweak sounds then to have an internal HD. I'm waiting on a couple of eBay auctions to get one.

I have scsi cd-rom and scsi hd.

"It's a SCSI 50 pin male connector on the MPC circuit board."
Yep. Sounds like Juke got this on lock..

So if the Akai HDM10 has scsi2 (female?) input from the MPC1000, and the XL has male 50 pin. If there is an adaptor with 50 pin female to SCSI2 male, it may work. Again, not sure if the operating system of the XL is up to it. Theoretically, it should work.

If it works, the HDM10 option (HDM10, 50pin female to SCSI2 male adaptor, laptop hard drive) would be cheaper than what was previously needed to make a hard drive work with the XL ( see http://www.mpc2000xl.com/Internalhd.htm).

There are also pics of the inside of the MPC1000 here:

Don't take this the wrong way but doesn't it seem kinda strange to think a device that doesn't have SCSI (MPC1000) would have a SCSI connector?
Why would Akai put a SCSI connector in it a not reap the benefits of external SCSI as well since it all one bus?
Just food for thought.
You have your options go through and built a kit to put a 2.5 HD in your 2000 or use an external HD.
Most people simply use an external HD or no HD.
The 1000 nor 2500 have SCSI, so nothing inside of them or that connects to them will be SCSI (or SCSI based), maybe you can rig something from the 4k.

What I am trying to do is explore to see if there is a new, cheaper way to do things. I am not sure of what's in the 1000, or the HDM10 - just going on what was posted in this thread. I have access to a 1000 so, I can check the manual or open it up to see what type of HD connection is in it.

Whatever the connection on the HDM10, there may be an adaptor that can connect it to the male SCSI pins in the XL.

The HDM is already an adaptor so that would mean adapting a adaptor, not really a smart move for a hard drive.

Even inside of most laptops you will see the 2.5 HD plugged into an adaptor that changes it to the type of connector they used on their board.

Bottom line you are going through a lot of gyrations to end up a very unstable interface.
Keep in mind that you are setting yourself up for even more potential for data loss than normally.

Be cautious of hack jobs and data storage.
Good luck on your quest.

That's a good thing to remember, I didn't think of that.

Some people create/invent problems for themselves when not knowing enough about their own situation and gear in the first place huh?..
I've done that before.....

I am going through the "girations" in search of knowledge. If something can be done cheaper and better, why not?

Although I am new to this forum, I am not new to MPC's having owned a 2000 since the 90's. I already have a 2 gig Jaz, a 100 meg zip, and a CD reader hooked up to my XL. I've installed memory, 8 outs, effect boards and screens to a number of different types of MPC's over the years. So my "quest" was for the knowledge.

It was, and still is, intriging to me to find out if the new HD kit could be used with the XL. If yes, then great! There's a cheaper way to put in a hard drive. If not, then, now I know.

Also, as for the unstableness of adapters, the current way to use an internal HD in the XL requires 2 adaptors.

With the mentality that some have we'd be still riding horses and not cars.

Thanks for statingyour creditials, unfortunately you didn't even meet the minimal require.

Also some of us ride horses everyday so whay is that a problem.
You are the same type of person who would try this half as idea and then post 100 questions trying to get help with it.
Or crying about data loss.

Another to remember is a dictionary can be your friend, last I checked gyration was with a "Y" not "I"

Do what ever you want, do as you please.
If losing your work doesn't bother you then you can make anything work.
In your case your problem started because you were too cheap to use the method that someone had already proven, someone with a much better understanding on MPC's I might add.

Sh*t why I am I ever responding to this?
