also keep in mind that sometimes you might sample something thats 4/4 time sig, but, you only get half a bar or 3 quarters of a bar...............when you use detect tempo and set the beats to 4, the bpm will be wrong because its detecting 4 beats on something that is less than 4 beats so the tempo will apear slower.
you have to adjust the beats according to how long the sample is too, so that the tempo is right, and everything hits on beat.
another good trick is to tap tempo, just to see if the bpm detect is in the right ball park. Tap where the snares will hit, that way even if you have something less than a bar, you still know the right tempo to work with.
