Keyboard or midi controller

ok my b-day is comming up on feb 6th and I was wondering whats more logical....to get a keyboard with midi ins and outs or to just get a midi controller and some money to buy some multi samples?...with the mpc2kXL is it better to use a keyboard or a midi controller keyboard with no sounds?

Depends on your style of production....If you want instant access to strings, pianos, bass etc you should probably start of with a decent k'board with sounds..PK 6...Motif...Triton
.... I spose you could start off with controller and get modules later on down the line but as its your b'day, you might aswel take it for all it is.

Do you know how to actually play a keyboard or at it? If not then I would probably bypass the midi controller and invest in some modules/or a decent keyboard with midi capabilities first and play them from the MPC. However, if you consider yourself somewhat decent at playing what you want to hear then I'd say get a controller, might as well be a full sized heavyweighted 88 keys keyboard. Then I would definately get a module to support that till I could upgrade/add more arsenal to my set up.

Can't pick one specifically to your taste but I can advise you to take a trip to Guitar Center or whatever Pro Audio store is near you and play with a couple of them. The one that gets your head bobbin' is usually the perfect starter module. From there the more you play with it the better you'll get and the better informed you'll be come time to purchase more equipment. My first module was a Planet Phatt which I still own. Just go out and get a feel for the modules at the store and grow from there. Aside of compatibility issues there is no wrong module to start with.
