This might sound a bit on the conspiracy theory side of things..................but i always wondered what other people thought?!

what if the-breaks.com was a data mining tool...........that is when you enter in the artist you sampled, or the sampling artist, the site recorded the info you put in and the people on the other end would use the information?

they would either use it to gain info on obscure samples(thats what i would do)..........or act as sampling police to check out who sampled what and which artists to be on the look out for to bust?

let me know what you all think?

to be honest, i never enter in info on shit i sampled...............

id k about that .... sounds like a good idea if you worked for like fbi or some music company but i use it just like you said when i get an obscure record i check it there to see if it was sampled ... most of the time it's not even up there but you know it was sampled before theres even samples that you know where sampled but are not up on there it just this site is not that quick to update info sometimes.....
but i feel you ...inless you enter(submitt)to the site i think you got nothing to worry about. most of what i see on there is popular music, like chart radio stuff as far as underground i havent seen much on there.

I do a search on all the records I buy...how else am I going to know if they've been sampled already. If it has been sampled already, I'm only going to use it in a different way. If it's been sampled a billion times (i.e. James Brown), I'll most likely never use it.

may be the "industry-lawyers" watch this Forum also for new sample-sources, and may be the forum-server is controlled by secret agents of the government...

i dont really ever care if its sampled or not already, if i hear something that has a hot sample, i will most likely hear it in a different way and end up sampling it completely different from another song that already used the same sample. and if they both turn out real similar, o well. but im usually creative enough with samples so it'll be rearranged and chopped up pretty good, and chances are you, you won't chop it and rearrange it the same way as someone else did if u never heard their track before.

and plus, im guessing getting sample rights to a track that's already has been sampled is probably easier

you guys all have good points.................

here are some more thoughts on diggin,

loh90, my thought on it is, even if someone else will flip it differantly, I still dont want to give up my sources.

Its all about this: whoever is gonna use the same sample, they should at least put some effort into acquiring it for themselves, not cause some other producer did the leg work for you! ya know.

im not sayin using the breaks is a bad idea, but some people use it as a referance point for what they are gonna go to the store and buy. You loose the point of digging on your own ya know?

When i go to the store, I want to discover that I love so and so on my own, not because the RZA used the sample.

part of me keeping my samples to myself decreases the chance of someone else using the sample just because I did..........whether its a little guy or a big guy who might be using the breaks to steal the info :)

i feel you on some point of what you said there cyrus, but what i like to do is find the stuff that has been sampled only to hear the rest of the album and to hear other musicians in the band, there combo of talent is something magical, and then when i go diggin i will pick up other music at the same time while i'm digin for the record that i want , i have fallen across some obscure stuff that , i dont know ,i have heard some of the stuff that shadow has found and it's pretty rare but i would like to think that i got some stuff he may not have.

i know it's ones choice to dig and not to pick up something that has been sampled before , but i have learnt to appreciate more music that way, and has xpaned my mid to other genre's like classical and synphony and such music only because i have been on the look out for a track or artist that has been sampled, but thats just my experience and i ahev been diggin for around 30 yrs now.

but thats just me
not sayin it works for everyone.
