IS THE MPC1000 A DRUM SAMPLER OR FULL SAMPLER???

these kids are idiots man,one even said he owned a ASR10 and argues with me the mpc1000 is a full fledge sampler.

sh!t man, maybe i don't know the difference, either

please enlighten me. what constitutes a full fledged sampler as opposed to drum/phrase sampler? audio tracks? deeper editing capabilities?

With the OS 2.10 update the sampler part has certainly stepped up, but to call it a full fledged sampler is a little on the optimistic side.

- The most obvious reason I see are the Envevlope only dealing with Attack & Decay as opposed to a ADSR config.

- The inability to assign a sample over several keys/pads with a chromatic tuning within the specified keys/pads is another thing which cries "Drums!".

- The LFO is not free running but slaved to the seq tempo and the modulation possibilities are severly limited.

- It´s relative low polyphony limit is also an indication. It´s not intended to playback huge arrangements with loads of long/static sounds as pads and strings.

EDIT: http://www.mpc-forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=49829 This thread proves another point. If the sampler was fully evolved you should be able to configure the filter(s) to react to incoming MIDI data, for example from a mod wheel.
Assignability to external data and internal modulation routes need to be avaliable or more complex/flexible than the now existing if it would be seen as a complete sampler.

From what I've learned it basically comes down to how you can manipulate the sample. The MPC 2000, 1000 and 2500 were set up with limited envelopes (no ADSR), limited LFO's (none on the MPC2000-XL), limited filters and other features that are common to full blown samplers. Although the low filter works great on Drum Bass, Snares, etc. But if you wanted to warm up a piano, organ, synth etc. you would probably have a hard time. So in this since it's not a FULL BLOWN SAMPLER because it wasn't design to enhance all sounds from 20HZ-20KHZ.

In terms of phrase sampling, the MPC's (2000 for sure) wasn't design to meet this demand. Old School Hip Hop Producers just learned how to freak it to their own benefit.

So if somebody says it's not a full blown sampler...they're right. There aren't any unique ways to color or shape your sounds besides eqing and other basic effects.

But that doesn't mean it's inferior or a poor piece of equipment or that you can't work around some of it's limitation.

It's not a 'fully fledged sampler' but it's a lot more than just a 'drum sampler'. I use it for complete compositions, including multisampled instruments, MIDI info, drums, vocals, etc etc, so IMO, anyone who only uses it for drum sampling is missing out.

Anyway, MPC's have always been MIDI sequencers first, then samplers. MPC stands for MIDI Production Center.

what the **** do you know anyway? you're acting like you run this site! lol jokes tutor. still finding it hard to believe you have a 1k, i'd have thought you'd have all of them (which, on reflection you may) or a 60 or a 3000.

the whole issuse comes about with this dude saying his asr-x is a "full fledged" sampler ( whatever that means and the 1k is 2nd to it by all means ) i have been telling this moron that his little asr is not a bad machine but the 1k is better by all means. If it samples its a sampler correct theres no diffrence about it.

Whatever that means is what people are in the process of trying to pin point here.

You can´t be that categorical. The MPC 1000 do what it does superbly apart from a few bugs. The ASR has it´s advantages, some might value the effects more than a tight sequencer.

That´s funny, why buy a thick **** maxed out EMU monster or Akai Z-series when you can get a Boss Sp 202 for a fraction of the price. A sampler is a sampler right?

true, but there are different levels of functionality, lesser functionality in a sampler usually being associated with it being designed for sampling drums.

My first sampler was a boss sp 303 i paid 299.00 for it and besides the limited sequencing the thing was a beast i loved it. I love all samplers they are by far my fav equipment but i bought the mpc because of the ability to sequence and to sample anything. I do full projects on it so to me it is a full fledged sampler theres nothing on it i need thats not there.

have you used any 'proper' samplers like, for example, a z-series akai? you can go much more in depth. true if you just knock together a few loops, you don't need all the functionality, but that doesn't mean a certain sampler doesn't have the functionality, hence making it more advanced/better than the phrase sample you picked up on ebay for a few pennies. it's like saying owning a nissan micra is having the best car in the world. sure, you may not need better than that, but it doesn't mean it's better than a Bugatti Veyron.

I also work solely on the MPC 1000, but I must admit I miss a lot of the functionality and flexibility of my trusty old S 2000 I´m storing on an attic for the last 10 months.
Just to load a sample and have it transposed over the whole or parts of the keyboard being able to play it piano style at an instant. Being able to easily modulate parameters via the mod wheel. Cross modulate the LFO´s, feeding number one with a low depth random wave from number two, beautifully organic.
Just a lot of possibilities which enables more control and interactivity with the sound.

On the other hand is the MPC 1000 cleansing in it´s simplicity, more spontaneous.

oh ive used plenty yamaha rs7000 , yamaha su700 , boss sp 303 , asr-x pro , akai s950 , akai 2000xl , akai 1000 , a emu series rack mount but i forget what it was called the one that allowed you to burn your own ram chips for the emu command stations , kontakt for pc , korg triton , roland fantom x series among others .
