My approach is to ignore these broad categories like is it 'full blown' or is it a 'phrase sampler' or what is it. they will never tell the whole story.

it is a midi sequencer bolted to a quirky sampler that evolved from the intention of making drums, but has become more than that... the mpc is basically its own category.

i think it's a sampler.
if it plays samples it must be a sampler per definition.
it got far more editfunctions than my old emax and them emax atleast was marketed as a sampler eventhough it got sequencer and i did all my beats with it.
i used to work with a Roland S-770 that had externalscreen and the screen
did'nt make it a computer.
but then again... a sampler is a computer....hrmm....and if it's a computer then a PC with a soundcard must be...come to think of it akai calls it a Midi Production Center.....hrmmm.....this is getting out of hand....

i call my 1k a drumcomputer cuz thats how i use it and thats what i want it to be

personally, i think a sampler is something which 'samples' ie records sounds, rather than just something that just plays them back. that's the thing with the majority of mpcs (4k excluded here): they can sample, and hence can record and play back any sound, so, although they were designed as a drum sampler combined with midi sequencer, the natural curiousity of people meant that they started to be used for recording and playing back other sounds. i believe the original limitations in sampling time caused people to sample short phrases from records and loop them, which may or may not have been pivotal in the uprise in beat based music.

It's a Music Production Centre that incorporates

A Sampler (with effects and processing)
and
A Sequencer
and
A Drum Pad controller

Simple as that!

It's a Music Production Centre that incorporates

A simple Sampler (with effects and processing that you won't use if you know what you're doing.)
and
A Sequencer that's as easy to understand as RTFM
and
A Drum Pad controller that breaks if you use it.

bargain!

ALL MPC's are SAMPLERS with a built-in SEQUENCER. End of. Just as the Akai S3000XL/S2000/S1000/S950/S900 etc., are ALL JUST DEDICATED SAMPLERS.

that's like saying a vauxhall corsa and a bmw m6 are cars end of. i think you'll find there's more to it spec wise. of course a skilled racing driver could probably get round a track quicker in a corsa than a 6 month old baby could in an m6!

So if they are NOT cars, then what are they??

i'm not saying they're not cars, i'm saying they're two different cars with vastly different specifications, just like the mpc 1k doesn't have a full adsr envelope, like, say, a s3000xl. i'm not talking sequencer here, JUST the sampler part of mpcs versus a 'proper' sampler. the mpcs just can't touch a dedicated sampler for functionality (that's excluding the 4k of course).

Well said, the most power thing in a MPC is the Sequencing ,then Midi Capabilities, along with it's Sampling engine. that's it. 8)

Automobiles?

the Dr sample series, the sp202,303,404 are classed as phrase samplers, i dont know why...

the MPC series gets all sorts of titles, sampling drum machine, groovebox, midi sequencing sampler, it depends on who writes the ads for the places that sell em... there is one name that gets over looked, the actual meaning of the abreviation "MPC", a Music Production Console, it sums it up for me, its what it say on the box....lol
