sampling voicemail off a cel phone

i have a voicemail saved on my cel that i want to sample (it's stupid, don't ask why).

if i went and got a cable that went from an input on the MPC to the earpiece jack on my phone, would that work?

i know the earpiece jack has two parts, one for the mic and one for the earpiece "speaker"... does radioshack make a cable that would connect these?

what would i be looking for? 1/4" mono to 3/32" stereo?

i mean, i obviously can't just hold the earpiece on the phone itself up to the mic, it would just sound like garbage, and i don't have a good speakerphone... i was just thinking a connection to the internals of the phone (bypassing the earpiece altogether) would probably output the best sounds...

The way It gone done on on radio stations (not the conventional type) when we wanted to have live callers was to create the lead ourselves with an earpiece/headphone unit compatible for the mobile/cell...

Basically cut off the ear-plug, then cut a head phone lead in half then fuse them together.

That was back in the day tho- With a nice mic and a preamp you can mic it up direct.

im pretty sure a phone is mono so just get a 1/32" mono, male on each side and get a 1/4" plug if they dont have a 1/32" to 1/4", it should work, i would run it through a mixer first to boost the level though cause it might sound low.

Take a pair of headphones, quality doesn't matter, separate one side and then plug the jack into a MIC jack on a Radio, Stereo etc and record that way. That's the cheapest and simplest way to do it. The earpiece will act as a MIC.

Put the headphone on the mouth piece as close as you can and RECORD.

yeah, but earpieces you buy for cels are "stereo" jacks... one channel is mono sound out (earpiece), one is mono sound in (mic)...

i'll just cut up some cables and make my own...

i'll need to figure out which 1/4" plug is in and which is out, but that'll only require trying both ways to see which works, then labeling them with tape afterwards.

One of my boys a while back was in my crib spittina verse and his phone rang. I liked the ringer he had on it. I told him to hold it up to the mic and make it ring again. He did, I sampled it, cleaned it up with some filtering, slowed it way down, laid some delay into it and now I have a melody along with a nasty dirty beat to go with it. It's his phone melody so I will only finish it for him..

Why not just listen to the voicemail on a phone with speakerphone and mic it like you would vocals. Sounds alot easier than rewiring phono plugs and what not. You can check your voicemail from anywhere right?

because (like i already mentioned) i don't have a speaker phone...

and for everybody suggesting that i just hold the phone up to a mic (like three have already suggested), i ask this:

why do we bother using wires at all? why not just have our MPCs play out of our speakers all the time, and record our beats with microphones in front of the speakers? who needs mixers anyway? why not just do it one layer at a time, overdubbing over each layer until we have our final song?

(hint: i'm being sarcastic here...)

the answer of course being that once sounds "leave" our wiring systems, the quality goes to shit. i don't know if you guys bought MPCs just becasue "i like teh purty drummy sounds they make", but i'm actually trying to produce quality recordings here.... i realize my "cel phone sample" isn't going to sound like it was recorded in a sound proof booth, but at least i'm hoping it won't get any WORSE than it already sounds...

I will tell u how I did it.......use the phone dialer on your computer.....call the cell phone........use another house line to put in your code arm your mpc and sample it all the......... trim it and use it........check my song......."where were u last night......thats how I did it

Yes and you need to use another phone to put in the code to get into the mailbox........because once you dial on phone dialer and you connect u cant press any more numbers on the screen
