Variation slider hihats - What's your technique

I've been playing around with using the variation slider to control the closed/open/pedal state of my hihats and I'm finding it to produce some interesting sounds that sound a little less "drum machine-like". How many of you guys are using or have played around with this technique and what did you think about it?[/color]

I use the 16 levels function.  I like varying each drum sound a bit especially tuning kicks.[/color]

Its why I dont need a keyboard....


I use it mainly with phrase samples, i dont like what it does with drums. I find it better to sample a open hat than use the slider, it sounds real digital (not really a bad thing depending on the song)...[/color]

I do sample open hihats. What I was talking about was having three hihats on three pads, one open, one pedal & one closed. then you set the closed hihat to be controlled by it's decay assigning the open hihat to one level and the pedal hihat to another level. After that I just assign the note variation slider to control decay on the closed hihat note. This allows you to change the hihat sound with the note variation slider.

What I like about using this is that I only have to play one pad to get all my hihat sounds. All I have to do is move the slider to open and close the hat.[/color]

heh i remember reading that
sometimes (if im hurting for hats)lay the same hat on 3 or 4 pads change the decay a bit on each,the volume and sometimes pan them differently .its not the greatest but it works once inna while[/color]
