Step edit is best learned by banging out a sequence in real time then studying it in step edit mode. Thats how I learned. Adds realness to your drums like crazy. Its been around as long as I can remember and Im talking 1984-85 dr.rythms and r5,r8's all used them. Probably went back further but thats how I always fine tuned my sequences. You all should really get into it at least for touch ups on your sequencing.
