Do It Yourself Akai MPC60 Memory Upgrade
For under $20 in parts (and 2-3 hours of your time) you can max out the RAM in your Akai MPC-60. The following parts are available from Jameco and other electronics suppliers:

(6) 514256 80ns DRAM ICs [20 pin DIP package] ~ $2.50/ea
(6) 20 pin DIP IC sockets ~ $.60/ea
Remove the voice board from the MPC60 then perform the following steps:

Desolder the six 514256 DRAM ICs installed on the voice board.
Install IC sockets.
Bend pins 3 and 16 on the new DRAM ICs outward at a 45 degree angle.
Solder the new DRAM ICs on top of the old DRAM ICs leaving pins 3 and 16 unconnected.
Install new double stacked DRAM ICs into sockets.
Connect pin 3 (WE) of all three top DRAM ICs in the left most bank together and to pin 2 of the adjacent 48 pin euro socket.
Connect pin 16 (OE) of all three top DRAM ICs in the left most bank together and to pin 5 of the adjacent 48 pin euro socket.
Connect pin 3 (WE) of all three top DRAM ICs in the right most bank together and to pin 10 of the adjacent 48 pin euro socket.
Connect pin 16 (OE) of all three top DRAM ICs in the right most bank together and to pin 11 of the adjacent 48 pin euro socket.
Reinstall the voice board, boot up the unit, go to Sounds then Sample new sound and verify maximum sample time is now 26.2 seconds.

Fun with Akai MPC-60 floppy drives
Turned on my Akai MPC-60 this past week and the floppy drive was dead. The original drive was a long discontinued 720k Mitsubishi. Opening up my other Akai gear I discovered Teac FD-235HF models. Doing some snooping around the net it turns out there were more than a dozen variations of this drive, however Teac still makes one model that should work just fine, the FD-235HFA529. This is still available at a number of online retailers. Being impatient I decided to visit Weird Stuff instead of waiting for a mailorder drive to show up. I picked up a FD-235HF3240 with even more jumper options than the current model for $4.95. While the jumper arrangement of the 3240 appears similar to the 5636 model, they are in fact totally different. It tooks some serious digging to turn up the jumper settings by I finally found the information I needed in a 1994 usenet posting. Seeing how I had some difficulty in collecting Teac drive information I decided to take some pictures before closing the MPC60 up.

Jumper settings for the Teac FD-235HF3240
A1 - B1 DS0 Drive select 0
B1 - C1 DS1 Drive select 1
A2 - B2 DS2 Drive select 2
B2 - C2 DS3 Drive select 3
A4 - B4 RY34 Ready output on Pin 34
B4 - C4 DC34 Disk Change output on Pin 34
C3 - C4 DC2 Disk Change output on Pin 2
C4 - D4 DC4 Disk Change output on Pin 4
A3 - B3 HA density set automatically
B3 - C3 HI2 density set by HD IN on pin 2
C3 - D3 HO2 density (HD OUT) output on pin 2
D3 - D4 HO4 density (HD OUT) output on pin 4
D1 - D2 LHI ---or---
D2 - E2 LHI HD IN low is high density
D1 - E1 LHO ---or---
E1 - E2 LHO HD IN high is high density
E2 - F2 HMK half mask for INDEX/READ-DATA
F3 - G3 NMK no mask for INDEX/READ-DATA
F1 - G1 IR LED on when: (Drive Select AND Ready)
G1 - G2 ML motor on when: (Motor ON AND LED on)
E4 - F4 ACD disable auto-checking
G3 - G4 REN disable auto-recalibration
E2 - E3 HF ---or---
E3 - E4 HF must always be in for this version of drive
For the MPC-60 jumper DS0, HI2, RY34, HF, REN, and FG. The drive came jumpered with DS1, HA, DC34, HF, REN, and FG.

Jumper settings for the Teac FD-235HFA529 (also FD-235HF6554 and FD-235HF6573
A1 - B1 DS0 Drive select 0
B1 - C1 DS1 Drive select 1
A2 - B2 DS2 Drive select 2
B2 - C2 DS3 Drive select 3
C3 - D3 REN disable auto-recalibration
D3 - E3 ACD(a) disable auto-checking
E3 - F3 ACD(b) disable auto-checking
D2 - E2 RY34 Ready output on Pin 34
E1 - E2 DC34 Disk Change output on Pin 34
E1 - F1 DC2 Disk Change output on Pin 2
G1 - G2 HA density set automatically
F1 - G1 HI2 density set by HD IN on pin 2
F1 - F2 HO2 density (HD OUT) output on pin 2
F3 - G3 IR LED on when: (Drive Select AND Ready)
For the MPC-60 jumper DS0, HI2, RY34, ACD(b), and FG. Teac also recommends bridging S14 on the bottom side of the drive controller to force 720k mode.

muh floppy kept gettin errors then died in mpc60ii that i got from ebay...

so i started reading the FAQ and gathered the relevant informations.

I had about 5 floppy drives here but all were panasonics...
(which i may be able to get to work if i can be bothered trying)

I went to the swapmeet, (where i go regularly to get records) in search of a teac 235 related floppy...

3/4 way there my rear tire blew on my bmx so i walked it to the local hardwre store and locked it up coz the swapmeet was gonna end at like 11 and it was nearly 10.

so i ge4t there an walk in, i find a dude with like 10 floppy drives for $2 AUD each!

so i bought 4.

Sony MPF420 (visible jumper block represent represent)
Sony MPF520
Toshiba
Mitsumi D359T3

No teacs tho, so i grab a couple of the ones with visible jumpers..

at first i started fkn with a sony 420, then i realised i had fkd summin up and got ADHD distracted with something and ended up slappin this mitsumi D359T3 one which i googled about and found some infos regarding moving a resistor to enable pin 34 driver ready command.

I did it.

Connected it.

And it loaded up programs all good!

If you guys want pics / info / anything i am pretty clued up on all this now so pm me an shit

I thought i had wasted a lot of my time but turns out this works dopely.

What i have theoretically gathered is that anydrive that you can get to

1. Auto density check (as per HI2 in the TEAC desc.)
2. SET FREADY Command ie. Pin 34 sends drive ready command and not disk sence.
3. set to be DS0

Should actually work.

When I had my old 60 (now gone) I tried to replace the floppy drive with wich it came to me (didn´t work since it was some newer pc-kind drive, maybe buildt in just to fill the place) with the one of my S 950 and it worked!
The drive was an "ALPS" DEP723D14B.

Find an old tape style scsi external drive and an old 500 meg to 1 gig apple hard drive. Combine. Have fun.

Also the apple 2115 external scsi drives are indistructable. I dropped on over 5 feet to a wood floor, the case is busted, but the drive still works.

Also. I've been using MO sisnce 94 and have lost maybe 3 partitions on altogether. I can still access the sounds on some of them as well.

You guys have prolly already done this but i only figured it out the other day.

I wanted to cut off more than two pads, so i set up a few pads with any sound on them, then turned these down to zero in the drum mix. Now i made these free pads cut off whatever else i needed cutting off. Now just play your seq, and press one pad when you need your sound to cut off, then go into step edit and press as much of those free setup pads as you need to cut off at the same time as your recorded cutoff one. Erh hope that made sence, and helped someone. :D

could you please post the exact size of the electroluminecent panel to cut
(if possible in centimeters)!
and please also the size of the lamination, cause i need to know which size of panel to buy and which size to cut whithout disassembling my display..

This is the MPC60 floppy drive i bought from Route 66 studios:

Beware:
1) Route 66 has very slow service to almost no service at all.
I couldve been ripped off.
I had to send them email twice after 2 months of my order in order for them so actually send the floppy.
And i even payed 34 dollars for urgent post.
2) The floppy drive DOES NOT FORMAT floppies as is.

When i put those 2 additional jumpers, when i open the mpc its takes about 10 seconds to boot.
It didnt take that long. It usually took like 3-5 secs to boot.
I hope everyhting is ok and the 10-15 sec delay wont cause any other problems to my mpc60.
