notebook pc suggestions...

not much of a computer whiz but i'm lookin' for a laptop with HOPEFULLY a soundcard input and output, but i never seen one before.

but if not, what are some good laptops that are cheap that are recommended for editing music and shit on the run.

If you're looking for a desktop replacement, check out Sager Laptops. the 888x series is the shiznit. If you're on the go, look for battery life...many laptops don't run over 2 hours on a battery charge...less if you're heavy on the disk drive!

For audio I/O...if you only need two channels, check out the Echo Audio Indigo card...most laptops sound suck, you actually hear the mouse moving on the screen & what not. This card is awesome. Otherwise, get a firewire interface, they are fast, and clean, but not battery operational. note that any USB device that powers off the bus, instead of a wall-wart, is NOT very quiet. But you might find one that goes both ways, so you'd have a portable rig for getting samples, or a cleaner rig for the studio.

I support the sager suggestion, but I think the Centrino products are the way to go if sound on sound is to be believed. I am about to go back the other way because of the Uad1. I will say that battery replacement is a factor in notebook ownership having an IBM and a VAIO the sony was a good deal at purchase time but the batteries die after about a year, and that is with removing them when on the power supply. Replacements are $250 from sony and $150 from others. Some of the newer VAIO's are even worse. a firewire HD is a must to do audio streaming. I love my echo layla 24 IO, it has been flawless. Money no object IBM Centrino with fire wire and RME Multiface and maxtor ext 120 drive.
