My external zip drive packed in a few months ago so I copped another one from Ebay. When I received it the seller had included an internal zip drive with it. This got me thinking. Is it possible to Mod a 2000 to run an internal zip drive?
There's three main considerations as far as I can see:
1. Size. The Zip is wider (not much) than the floppy drive on the MPC but not as deep. It would envolve a bit cutting on the front but not much. Might need to jiggle the motherboard a bit too. Maybe not.
2. Scsi connection. I could either disconnect the external scsi connector and build an internal cable from that or I could get a second scsi connection by wiring it from the motherboard(this is risky as it might blow the scsi fuse and have to deal with scsi termination and ID stuff.)
3. Power. I don't know if the power to the internal MPC floppy drive will be enough to power the Zip drive.
Has anyone ever heard of or tried this successfully? Does anyone have any info, circuit diagrams etc. about this kinda stuff? Sorry if this sounds crazy but I like working on the 2000 but I don't like working with external drives. I'm not too fond of Zip disks either but everything I have is on Zip so it would be cool if i could get a drive into MPC.
