hows everyone swing technique

how do ya all swing your drums?

Im startin to feel like my technique is getting redundant (sounding the same in all my tracks to me so it getting annoying)


because most of the time i do it by trial and error and i know what works for me, but just wondering what works for others.

I usually keep the snares and kicks rigid and swing the hihats. Or ill swing all 3 together-no more than like 57% or so. and sometimes ill use it to layer kicks.

I almost never put swing on my hits. What I do though is just go into step mode then add, move, delete etc hats. That way it is original and you have more control how it would sound.

I only use it very sparingly and with low settings.

i think though if your after one of those skippy or slidy beats swing is a good starting point...it means you can set the swing and wack your drums in and then go into step edit and mess around with the hits...rather than having to shift all 2nd and 4th 16th notes by 4 or 5 ticks first just to to get that initial groove...

i rarely use swing when doing hip-hop/breaks beats...much better for acid jazz or housy styles...

i turn the quanitize off if i need swing...other than that i always experiment...i have no set formula for swing percentages

I've never used it, I prefer to play my beats exactly the way I want using no quantise and then maybe a little messing in step edit. I don't like the idea of letting a machine decide the groove of beats!

granted...i think there is a difference in using swing to save you time in shifting notes you know you def want shifting by a certain amount......simply having swing on wont stop you from moving notes later and it certainly wont give you instant groove- everyone knows that comes from velocity, note length, as well as note placement...after picking your sounds and before tying them all together......

although a couple of my songs have a strict swing most of them, whether im using swing or not, involves more work in step edit......a couple of the swing settings on the mpc are perfect for certain house styles as ive messed around with the hits after swinging and they sounded better in there original swung positions....im not quite as bad as artists like 16B or C-swing who use the same logic swing settings for each of their house tunes.....in fact the names give you a clue to what they use....

most of my non house choons have note placements which are all over the place....
