Harddrive spindown on purpose

I asked JJ, to implement a function to spindown the drive

It would extend the life and it would help preventing data
corruption.

With the old OS I always entered the Seq Edit screen after
loading files, and it sure gave peace of mind before hitting
away on the pads, with the drive right underneath.

Could it be possible that the read and/or write errors *some* users
observing are due to disk corruption by mechanical influences?

We are treating our laptop's and portable disks as raw eggs and at
the same time we're banging at our MPC's with the same exact HD
spinning under the hood.

I could imagine that the heads "dive" through the airfilm (Bernoulli effect)
for a short moment, leaving traces at the plattersurface.
At least when you try to hit a 127 velocityvalue...

It would be an explanation for the saving problem being random.
Ok, users observed the same thing with CF-Cards, but then again...
Every possible cause is to isolate.

why did you ever leave?

I think you are right cause more ppl have problems with the hard drive than with the compact flash card.

How hard you hitting your pads?

It doesn't take much to trigger the pads you know. Besides, hard drives are very durable. A laptop sees much more abuse than my MPC ever will. If you travel much at all or do any kind of business away from the office, you'd know laptops are pretty tough.

I wouldn't worry about holding your MPC's hand just to get it to work right. Whatever the problem is, it has to do with the software interface to the HD.

i think that the most probs of hd data corruption is the incompatibility
of bigger hd s over 30 gig.....

i m using a 10 gig ibm and have no!! data corruption ......

iv e also observed that my hd is turning off in some ways when i m using cf cards.... and restarts when checking hd datas.... i think it s
implemented in the had.....

With OS 1.05 I can hear the hard drive spin down (goes quiet) a few seconds after I leave the Save/Load screen. It spins up when I select it in the Load or in the Save screen. Nice

you have to go into load/save mode in order to access the hd. the mpc doesn't play anything directly from the hd. when you load it, it gets loaded into the ram and the seq plays that. i dont think there is a chance you could turn the unit off while it was using the drive unless it was intentional. eg: you go into the load screen, start loading a long sample...turn your mpc off.

but i do agree, we bang on these things with the hd in it... i type on the laptop i'm using right now .. but i hammer the mpc.

having thought about this matter for a while and also having been inside my mpc many many times, i am no longer concerned about vibrating the hard drive.

the pad bank is built so it is not in contact with the harddrive. there is enough space and framing in between the two devices that i don't think concern is necessary...

and for the record, and this is based off the observations by Tbonus, data loss and the issues the mpc has with saving seems to be a result of saving files overtop of themselves - when we get the Directory Error message. the answer - don't save overtop of your own files.
