well,
now that i actually think about it a bit, there are 2 things wrong with the knob.
1. the finish on the knob........wears off
2. the actual pot that makes the clicking sound........you know the turny thing the knob sits ontop.
so you would have to replace both to improve the knob, you couldnt just replace the top part.

all it takes is someone to desolder their wheel, scan it next to a penny on all sides, and email that sht to mouser's part identifier. get the specs and look for comparable rotary encoders.

The biggest delima with swapping out encoders is the shaft length.
Like with the ASRx/ASRx Pro Ensoniq you short life ecoders, better heavy duty ones were later found with the proper rating but the shaft was slightly longer.
The original knobs wered mounted below the face plate, but the new ones sat on top.
Worked much better and have long life, fortunately they look ok either way.
The on the MPC might not look too nice sitting up high.

When speaking of any type of encoder shaft just refers to the height.
Just carry over from the days of pots.
In other words the biggest problem with swapping the encoder would be the physical dimensions more than electrical specs.
Sorry if I was miss understood.

belt sander. sand that sucker down if need be.
i'd love a durable as hell rotary encoder in my mpc. i'm on my 2nd, and i feel like it's starting to whine about overuse. given the trend, they last about 1.5 years of (heavy heavy) use.
meanwhile, we use the exact same type of tact switches, which is good because you can get 100 of them for under 5 dollars on ebay.
