all the more reason to turn it off. a screensaver isn't going to help if it's the heat from the power source that's damaging it.

You are giving the answers yourselves.
It's obviously the heat of the powersupply which is altering the chemicals used in the lightspreading foil and/or in the LED's.
As LED's doesn't generate noticeable heat,
only putting off the MPC completely or a designchange could have prevent the displays powersupplyside from going bad.
errr... up to 11.42 years minus the hours of use of course.

ps. I remember the 3k having ventilation holes on top of the housing.
