JJ OS feature requests: (now that it's a reality)

I have to say that this OS is really impressive. For the past few monthes I haven't even felt like turning my machine on very much. This has really renewed my passion for the mpc again.

Jahrome started a post like this already but I thought it might be a good idea to get one going with everybody's input in a uniform manner that we can just forward over to JJ.

So,
Post your top 3 feature requests here so that we can give JJ an idea of what should be implemented in upcoming versions (free or not).

Mine are:

1.) Realtime swing and shift timing via qlink on sequence playback.

2.) Realtime timestreach via qlink

3.) A simple 16 or 32 step, 8 track xox style sequencer function. (ie: the ability to freely place and mute/ unmute notes in a sequence in realtime)

your #3 is a great idea!

Mine would be the ability to apply quantize with a percentage value, just as in Logic Pro.

I don't know if you saw this but this is a 'Wishlist' copied from the rear of the mpc1000 v4 OS manual. I'd like to see most of these in the 2500 too.

- Clear Memory
- Preview sounds from disk (in load mode) while playing a sequence
- Show note duration in grid edit (with visual bars)
- Screensaver
- Individual ilters per pad layer (if possible to keep sample acurate)
- Individual envelopes per pad layer (if possible to keep sample acurate)
- Trim mode > Edit: insert sound (like in older mpc‘s)
- Grid mode: show bar/step info
- Full ADSR envelopes support
- Qlink sliders send cc messages through midi in realtime and record them
- Real-time modulation of loop points (with a MIDIvalue, LFO or ENV)
- Tap tempo: tap averaging up to 8, 12 or 16
- Ability to move/rearrange regions in chop mode

- keep „sliced samples“, samples stereo and dont force to mono them.

A few very nice ideas in there. Looks like modulatable loop points is coming already, and I'm sure he's already done the last item on the list, so there's a good chance some of these others might make it too. If they're 'coming soon' to the 1000, you can bet the 2500 will get it also

King V - Point one is almost hinted at in the MPC1000 OS, unless I've misunderstood. Sure could be nice. I can't imagine real-time timestretching ever making it in though, I'm guessing that some really heavy coding would be necessary to pull that off.

I don't know. The realtime pitchshift algo seems freshly written by JJ and sound(ed) amazing.

format translation. ie... AKAI 31000/3000 support. And, might as well throw in some Battery/SampleTank/Halion/etc support, as well.

wait... maybe not. never know what the new flavor of the month will be...

i'll just be happy with AKAI CD format support.

and bring back AkSys for the handicapped.

Actually, my big wish is for some kind of piano-roll editor for midi tracks. It sounds like JJ might be going in that direction:

Heres two ideas for those that are heavy on reconfiguring loops to sound different by chopping the original sample and tapping it out in different order to make it sound like its smoothly played out differently, by chopping it, but theres no gaps in the sample afterwards although its chopped. I trick everyone with this on the 3000, but on the 2500 its not happening cuz an essential function is GONE (at least I can't find it).. read below

How about this:

1) After I assign a copy of a sample on four different pads, I go to TRIM mode, and everytime I touch one of those four assigned pads , the trim screen jumps to the status and the sound of that other pad, so I don't have to chop a bit..and then remember exactly where I was on the chop while I scrollll through the menu to get the to the other sound (distracted by this VERY LOUD wheel) and by that time totally forget what I was doing, and I can hit the pads back and forth with 2 fingers to test it while I chop it out.. like the 3000

2) AUTOMATICALLY alphabetizing Samples- If I sample a sound called DarkCity, and afterwards I sample 35 drum sounds into the mpc, then I make a copy of DarkCity1, DarkCity2, in the program menu the DarkCity sounds should automatically group next to eachother, instead of going behind the last thing sampled into the machine, they never should have got rid of that. Now i have to chop the begining of DarkCity1 and then scroll through 35 drum sounds in TRIM mode just to finally reach the DarkCity2 sound to chop it .. talk about totally fcking up my work flow! This sounds similar to #1, but its not, if I sample a sound and then copy it on the spot I can assign them to pads without having to scroll through tons of mixed up sounds to find which one goes next. #1 is just about hitting pads to change the screen in TRIM mode.. which is ESSENTIAL for taking a 4 second off-beat sample (where the tempo changes 15 times in those 4 seconds so you can't loop it) and choping it 13 times to re-arrange it and make it sound tighter.

1. Just ADD all the remaining features the MPC 2000/2000XL/3000 has that the MPC 2500 doesn't currently have. That would be a first big step. This includes compatibility with Akai 1000/3000 format samples as well as several additional sample editing tools.

2. BARS MENU. From the MAIN MENU, moving the cursor to BARS and presssing OPEN WINDOW gives you access to adding additional bars to a sequence. This section could be improved. Why stop with just adding bars to the end of a sequence? You should be able to ADD bars to the begining, middle, end, etc. This function is already in the SEQUENCE EDITING MENU. So the best thing to do is link the MEUNUs. In other words, pressing OPEN WINDOW with the cursor on BARS will bring you to the SEQUENCE EDITING page that allows you to insert/add, delete, and re-arrange bars.

3. Automatically assign muliple samples to a program upon loading. This is a feature request that I made a year ago that JJ added a similar function. However, it is not exactly as good as my suggestion. Currently, when loading an individual sample, you can choose to have this automatically assigned to a free pad but must press YES. But I would like this to work on multiple samples. On my PC, I can fill a folder up with samples (I have tons of samples). I would like to be able to tell the MPC to load all the samples at once and have the samples assigned to a program automatically. This is a huge time saver.

Honestly, I can't figure out what you mean. What essential function is gone? They pretty much work the same way in this regard.

I think these two ideas are excellent timesavers and shouldn't be too hard to implement. Hopefully JJ reads this...

3 things that I would like to see is:

-Instead of holding down the Q1 after button and using the slider to truncate start and end points, How about just press the "Q1 after" button(s) so that they are on for truncation. And when you done truncating with the slider(s) turn the "Q1 after" button(s) off! and for detailed truncation use the annoying, clicking data wheel. I think this would make truncation very fast! Kind of like the way you truncate on the SP1200.


- The other thing that I would like to see is Naming things changed on the machine changed back to the way it was on the 2000xl..Naming files is alot more work now it feels like. Keep forget about this cursor positioning thing!

-Step Edit mode like on the 2000XL. The editing of values is not to friendly. I like the way it is set up now, with all being on one page. But trying to edit is just like trying to name something.

i'd like to see the mpc export your tracks to wave files. instead of recording track by track, it would be dope if it can export all of your tracks in wave form to be imported into cubase or protools or whatever.
