Zip Drives

How do you connect a zip drive up to the MPC? I thought you just take the cable and hook em up, but the ends don't match. Do I need a different cable, or should I hook it up to the computer and transfer the files that way? I didn't want to do that since I had heard folks saying that the PC will corrupt the data on a zip drive (or somthing like that). Right now, I just installed the driver for the zip, and my computer recognizes it, but it wants to format the disk. It won't allow me to see what's on it.

The computer can't see what's on it because the zip was originally formatted on mpc.

IF you had originally formatted that zip on pc via fat/fat16, you'd be able to see the files on pc AND mpc.

so how do I access the files on the zip drive. the USB cable has two different ends.. the kinda square one, and the longer rectangular end.. The square end plugs into the Zip drive, but there is no rectangular connection on the MPC. I know I'm not the only one using the 2500 that had zip disks from previous MPC's...

I think that you cant.


You could try and search / phone up a USB cabling internet shoppe? See if they do custom jobies.

Then you would mount it as a HD if you can get that far.


I wondered if you formatted it on the 2000 or something whether the OS format is different on the 2500??? meebee.

The only way to utilize a zip drive with your 2500 is with a computer. You CANNOT plug the zip into the 2500's USB slot. The 2500 is seen as an external HD by your computer and can only be utilized as such.

Ok, this is what Ii thought, but my computer does not want to read any of my ZIP disks. It recognizes that there is a zip drive connected to the USB, but wants to format the disk. I would never assume that something so simple could be so difficult. Splicing wires, and Setting up SCSI id's on the XL was easier than this. ..

Don't over think it, the computer will recognize the device attached but not the disk cause it was formatted on an MPC. If you don't have an mpc to read that disc then ask someone with a 2kxl w/ zip drive to save your stuff off of it for you. I use to have a zip in my computer AND 2kxl and that's how I transferred my sounds between each, but I had ALWAYS formatted my disks on computer first off after I bought them.

It wants to format the disks cause it doesn't recognize the format.

I have a few friends that have the XL, but something like that will take a lot of time. Honestly, I'm not looking forward to it. I have 2 projects that I need to complete by this weekend. 1st problem is I don't know what disk I save the songs on, and the second problem is that I will have to drive 15 miles to my boys spot (with the XL and computer) and it's not gonna be easy to catch him at home. ( JJ, if your reading this, a nice OS update to allow the MPC to accept and recognize usb devices would be REALLY appreciated!)

An OS update, I don't think that can happpen
due to 2500 harware config.

The square USB connector on the back of the 2500, it basically means
the 2500 is a slave device.

The rectangular USB connector on the computer means the computer is a master device.

You can't have a USB slave (zip) connected to another USB slave (mpc) device.

This is another reason why I like the Triton Extreme, is has BOTH the square slave AND rectangular master USB ports in the back.

I can use that USB zip (slave) to my Triton (master) AND/OR connect my Triton USB (slave)to computer.
