First, changing patterns on the EM1 will always change both sounds and pattern. That's the way it works, no way to change that. The point of disabling clock receive on the EM1 and/or clock send on the MPC is to stop the EM1 pattern seq from running when you start the MPC seq -- so it doesn't matter what the EM1 pattern is cuz you never hear it unless you press PLAY on the EM1. That way, you should only hear a change in the sounds when you change the program. If you want to hear a particular EM1 pattern with different EM1 sounds, you'll have to record it into the MPC with sync first then turn the sync off, play back on MPC and switch the EM1 programs.
Second, you are misreading that EM1 MIDI implementation chart, and you need to brush up on your MIDI controllers. Check these out:

http://www.tweakheadz.com/midi_controllers.htm
The number "32" isn't where you set the BANK SELECT LSB, it is the BANK SELECT LSB. Look at the chart in the first link. The EM1 only responds to LSB 0 and 1 because it only has two program banks -- any other number is ignored.
OK sorry about the off-topic tangent there, I'd try to confirm these 4.22 errors but I haven't gone past 4.15 yet, the latest stuff sounds pretty buggy...
actually i misread your first post.
Actually, they change both on the EM1. If you only want to change sounds, use the MPC to do the sequencing and turn off external sync on the EM1.
i read that as turn off the external clock on the em1 to change sounds with the mpc.
thanks for the links. i will check them out...
