MPC1000 Hard Drive Recommendations

Do the original Blue/Red MPC 1000s have the hard drive mounting frames built inside them? Or just the newer Black models?

I'm thinking of putting an 80GB hard drive in mine soon. And recommendations of the best place to buy?

I just got the HDM kit in the mail, and I have a compatible hard drive - th Fujitsu MHN2200AT.
I am trying to slide the hard drive into the kit, and it does seem to go into the kit's parts, but the holes for the screws do not line up no matter what I do. That is to say, it seems to fit, but the screw holes are about a hair short of lining up. Have I done anything wrong? What gives? Has anyone had this problem?

Any Ideas you all?


EDIT-- I used electric tape to secure the hard drive in place and it appears to be working fine.

I just wanna note that the hard drive I just installed is working at at most half the speed of that of the CF cards, in both loading/saving files and connecting to the computer.

hmmmm I'm glad I decided to register on this site before I did a major upgrade next month...I guess after reading the quoted post I have to say the law of averages on those who seem to be satisfied with their upgrade outways a few glitches...If loading is anything like that of my computer...which is slower loading than my cf cards...I can live with it...having to do away with the cards would work for me...upgrading the harddrive on the 1k is new to me....my only reluctance with keeping my 1k is the problem with the pads

I just got a 120gb hd and use it so that I can now rip up to 200 CDs (WAV files) right into the MPC. This means I can produce with only my MPC for an extended period of time portably, without being tied to a computer, CD player and collection, etc. I don't have to use the Akai AD converters, or worry about the quality of my cables, CD players DA conversion, etc. And the files are already named. Of course, if I am sampling from a record, want to warm up the signal with a preamp, or want to sample an analog signal for an effect, the option is always there.

With that being said, the transfer rate is very important to me. Here's what I found out:

Loading a song from 5400 Samsung HD: 30 seconds
Loading a song from 120x CF card: 2 minutes
Saving that same song to a 5400 Samsung HD: 40 seconds
Saving that same song to a 120x Transcend CF card: 3.5 minutes

Ripping an album straight to MPC1000 HD via USB1.0: 13 minutes
Ripping an album straight to HD enclosure via USB2.0: 2.25 minutes

Overall speed difference between direct MPC1000 HD USB and USB 2.0 HD enclosure: anywhere from 6 to 18x faster with 2.0.

For me, that warrants popping the HD out every so often and using the enclosure idea mentioned earlier to load up the albums. It also calls for using the CF card intermittenly for certain situations to gain the USB 2.0 transfer speed where I might otherwise be tempted to go MPC USB1.0 direct or pop the HD.

Also, I developed a quick app for renaming the wav files and putting them into Artist/Album folders if anyone's interested. This is important because currently the JJ os only reads the first 16 characters of a WAV file and thus if your name is redundant (like London Symphony - Track 1.wav, London Symphony - Track 2.wav), it will only load track one because it can't distinguish between the two.

20 GB Hard Drive up for grabs.

Fujitsu brand hard drive which I've decided is just too much space for my needs. It is tested and fully compatible with MPC's (detailed specs available if you want them).

Western Digital Model#WD1200VE-00KWT0 120GB 8mb cache 5400rpm 9mm purchased from PC Club for $110, HDM10 purchased for $29 from Platinum-Records. Now I just have to figure out how to verify if it sees it all...

That's typical of every hard drive I've seen or used.
The reason why is that manufacturers round off the capacity specs to the nearest Gigabyte.

Ok, I thought so... I do upgrades on XBox's and I get the same thing as well. I just was not sure if I was suppose to get the full amount on this since it is different, or not much different from a computer now... LOL...

Yeah, you're good with the hard drive!

The processor on the 1000, 1000BK, and 2500 are all the same Renesas SH7727, which operate at 100 or 160mhz. That amounts to an old Intel Pentium1 processor, basically. I'm willing to bet that it's running at 100mhz, since 160 mhz would be the speed if it's overclocked. As far as I know, the MPC1000 isn't overclocked.

Read up on it and also read the Specs link. You'll see that it has alot of capabilities. But to ask any more questions of it wouldn't yield any more answers here, to be honest with you. We're hoping that JJ would study the specs entirely, so that he could take more advantage of it if possible (but somehow doubtable).
