New OS for the classic version?

If people are really serious let's start listing the features that you actually want to see on the 2K Classic. Don't waste time ranting and raving. It will be challenging to figure out how to reengineer the OS on the original MPC 2K classic but once we know what programming language it was written in then begins the massive project of trying to include and expand features. It won't be easy but if people really want to see it happen start organizing your efforts. This will be a long term project but who knows a bunch of smart people doing various tasks I'm sure we could pull it off... hopefully in this lifetime lol

I'm down with dat too.

We could do with a software upgrade, give us time stretch & allow us to use multiple programs!!!!!!

i think, that timestretcch doesn't run on the mpc 2000. the cpu in the xl is better and on the xl timestretch sucks.

I am interested in re-os'ing my 2KXL in to a 4000/motif/protools/sports car. Could you do that with an easy OS tweak, or what? I'm sure alot of other 2kXL users could also use an MPC4000/motif/protools/sports car, right?

No seriously, I thought the box could do more when I had the classic, and still with the 2000XL. They made a much deeper sampling engine, based on the Z series, and put it inside the 4K, 1000 and 2500 models. I believe this is why you can not do realtime filter/tuning, etc. with the 2k or xl
Because the sample engine is not robust enough. But those models could be adapted, I think the two older joints are relatively the same, at least the engine itself.

its funny everyone always complains about the choppin in the classic, i actually think its far superior to the xl. i cant stand having to decide how many zones i want to chop it into, i like in the classic just going one by one.

Im down for it. Don't forget the AUTOCHROMATIC FUNCTION. Real nice. Im willing to pay for it too.

Another thing that always drove me nuts about te 2k is that if you set all bads to cromatic notes and you try to play it with a MIDI keyboard, it just plays the same note. That blows...

okay, i have raed i interview and the akai man said that the xler has a other/newer cpu.

Thanks for that bit of information Rohan, that's what I suspected about the internal hardware of the 2k classic and XL. I do know the 2k classic (which I have) doesn't have an internal IDE port like the XL, I'm not sure if there are any other hardware differences. Does anyone know what other hardware differences both these machines have?

So if the hardware between the MPC 2k Classic and MPC 2k XL are almost the same then how was Akai able proprietize the OSes between both of these very similar machines. I mean I can see not being able to run the MPC 4000 OS on my 2k classic but come on the XL is not that much different other than the software.

I'm sure XL owners are indifferent about this topic since they already have the features they want (or maybe not) but why not also look at expanding the features even past what is present in the XL? I'm not talking about a huge expansion but some features that could make life a little easier.

Meh, I dunno, I like picking out the tempo and then saying 'chop 8 bars of this' in the XL. Has made chopping up dozens of samples real quick for me. On the other hand, the Data wheel on the 2000 classic is the best for chopping I've ever fk'd wit. ALso, you can overlap zones, which you can't do on the XL.

Please consider a 2k classic update...



one idea would be to find (if possible) flash rom chips that would work in the 2k and sell those with a new os already installed.... that way it would be an os upgrade and a memery expansion....
I think many user do not have the flash rom in their machine.
i don't know if this is tecnically possible or not....

there is only one thing i want in the 2000XL, a feature that was promised and never delivered - a grid edit mode. select step edit, select grid, select pad, press play - mash out beat.

i don't need a flying car, or a unicorn, i just want grid edit. i'm seriously considering selling my XL and getting a 2500 just for the grid. grid was promised in 2001!
