I use Audition and I'm not really exactly a pro at it, but I do use it solely for EQ... Heres the thing though... I mainly run VST Plug-Ins through it and EQ and shape my sounds with them instead of the built-in EQ...
As far as tips... All I can say is to use the FFT Filter for your initial EQ... Some times a Parametric EQ is good too, especiallly if you're tryin to get a specific Range cut-off... I only use Graphic EQ (especially 30 Band) on an entire mix to bring out maybe more bass... Never anything drastic on the Graphic EQ...
The biggest tip of all though is to train your ear and trust that...
Also in reference to your ear... Never do any destructive EQ... Always save Undo files so that you can Undo what you did... Sometimes a sound will sound perfect and as soon as you throw it in your mix it clashes with everything you had going... Constantly bounce back and forth between your individual sounds and your multi-track mix... It will save you lots of time and grief...
