Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

How do you make it so autochromatic reacts to the touch of your keyboard? For instance, when I put a string sound on autochromatic that I sampled for 6 seconds, it plays the full 6 seconds no matter how short I play the note on my keyboard. How do you adjust this so the sample just plays the legnth of time you hold your notes for? This was real easy on my 2500, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to do it on the 2kXL

Go into the program and "PARAMS" for the pad the sample is assigned to and change it from "POLY" to "NOTE OFF"

You may have to do this for all the pads in the auto program, so the easiest way is just to spin the wheel constantly clockwise while hitting every pad in order quickly with the cursor on "POLY" (as Kev Brown does in his youtube video...)

Maybe the easiest, but uses your data wheel much too much. I wouldn't do that since the replacement of this part is always a hussle.

Much respect, will try that tonight.

Been doing that for years and have not damaged my wheel in the least.. Of course, just don't LEAN hard on your wheel, it's fine.

or you can avoid the hassle by setting the note to note off before ac assigning it

How do you avoid it this way?

I have another question while were on the subject-hopefully it can be answered in here rather than starting a new thread. I am just starting to use this function however I am a little lost as to how to get numerous instruments spread accross the pads. For example last night I messed with a crazy brass sound and did the auto function and spread it accross my keys while it created a new program in the MPC. However I realized that doing this with numerous instruments would be very limiting due to the fact the MPC will only allow 4 programs in a sequence. Is there anyway around this, to get numerous instruments-all seperately mapped accross the keys and be able to use them all in a sequence? Thanks for any info on this matter.

What he means is if the the original sample you use for auochrom is set to note off then all the samples in the autochrom program will be set to note off. Works for other parameters too like filter, enevelope settings etc.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I "heard" that you could use more than 4 programs if you use program change messages in the Step Edit screen. I could never get it to work right and I dont know anyone who has. maybe you should cop another mpc to put next to it so you have 8 programs.

What is my last name Trump?

Good lookin on that tip about setting the original sample to note off...that's huge.

yeh u can have more than 4 pgms in memory, but only have 4 assigned to the DRUM holders, and you cannot have no more than 256 samples in memory, and you dont need to insert the pgm changes in the step sequencer you can do it from the main page on the xl.

I know you can have more than one drum program in memory at a time, I have already done that, however I was wondering how I'd be able to turn my MPC into basically my own Synth workstation...having at least 10-15 of my own sampled sounds to spread accross the keyboard and play them all in one sequence. I'm pretty sure this is not possible but I figured I would check. Thanks.

You can use program changes if you have an empty slot.

For example if you use DRUM 1 for drums, Drum 2 for Bass, Drum 3 for loops, Drum 4 for melody you can swap out the program for another if one of the slots is not playing.

Say you got to a point in a song where the melody line in Drum Slot 4 isn't playing you can insert a program change to change Drum 4 to some other sound and then back to the melody again when your finished.

The MPC only allows 4 simultaneous programs to be used. It's 4 part multitimbral.

It is possible to do what you want with 12-15 samples you just have to think about the layout of your programs and song before you start.

Also as a "melodic" sampler the MPC is quite limited and its main focus as a sampler veers towards short one-shot samples or loops. The envelopes, for example are very basic attack decay type. Not ideal for more expressive sounds. It still is a great machine though.
