numark tt 500's are a good purchace, real strong sturdy tables.. not the build of 1200's but more torque then them.. and lets face it im sure ur not gonna be throwin them down flights of stairs etc.

Alot of turntablists goin with the numarks over vestax these days, either the numark tt 500's or the ttx's

also check your records, make sure your hole isn't too big, sometimes if the hole is loose and you backspin, it can shift.

You can fix this by using small piece of scotch tape in small pieces and put them in the hole.

Also if the record is warped then any fast movement on the record would make the stylus take off like it went over a ramp.

Make sure your needle is aligned properly, it should travel parallel to the grooves.

In addition the height of the tone arm needs to be adjusted, this usually depends on the type of needles you use, check the needle guide, check the sure website they have a lot of info about balancing.

format thats tight thanks. good tip on the hole thing. i actually have a few like that but it never bnothered me because i havent tried scratching yet. gonna check out the shure(?) site and check into some info. I always wondered how to adjust the weight on the tone arm and adjust the other pieces effectively. I usually just experiment but I dont know if what I do actually helps.

is there a spoecific place that weight has to be to keep the arm from bouncing?

thanks tusk and c0mplex!

theres not a solid rule, as there's always varients, but that qert / youtube link i posted shows a basic starting point
your aiming to get a balance basically, so when you lift up the arm it floats abit before falling. some peops want all the weight on the needle, put with that turntable you shouldn't need any extra weight - just light hands!

Co sign..

Each table and stylus is diff hense the varients, not only that but it can also come down to personal preference..

The standard way (usually) to set up 1200 with shure stylus for instance is have the tone arm flat so its purly horizontal and not angled, have the anti skate set to 0 and the tone arm weight on backwards, some peeps like to angle the shure slightly inwards.. some heavy handed turntablists do this, although it would burn through ur records.

All comes down to a mix of what ur usin and ur preferences, althought its best to base those preferences on known techniques in settin up.. then adapt them to suit urself.

See if u can have a jam down ur local store (or take a dj with u to test properly along side urself).. just make sure u dont rush into any purchase and find whats best for u. In the lower price range the Numark tt500's perform real good, but then u might prefere something else over them.

aight yall. i bought the cheap mixer. i actually didnt get the dm950 USB mixer I got the regular dm950. got it for $60 bucks. its more then enough for me to practice on. im havin a lot of fun. this stuff is harder then i thought lol! naw but im gettin the hang of it. i been spendin a lot of time on it.

aight, i figured out that if you wet your finger a tiny bit, it helps to grip the record. is there anything you could buy or something that you could dip your finger in from time to time? not necessary just a thought..

i actually have my weight all the way on the arm. all the way up so the needle stays on the record. anywhere else and this thing just skips and bounces around. so i keep it like that. aight so i have this basic setup and im just reporting back that everything is connected and this sh!t is fun.

thanks for all the help. i will definately come back to this thread once im ready to upgrade!

Not that I would necessarily recommend it because its probably not the healthiest thing in the world, but I just lick my fingers when I feel like I'm not getting the grip I need. I think it's actually turned into a habit because I'm pretty sure I lick them some time when I don't really need to. I try to keep a towel or something to wipe my hands clean with from time to time (some of the older stuff I spin can be real dusty), and every once in a while some antibacterial soap, as washing my hands isn't always convenient, and often I try to eat while I'm doing a gig, which is a pain if I'm eating food that I have to eat with my hands...grease and vinyl do NOT mix.

I've seen other people use other stuff to keep that little bit of moisture on there hands though, even the little thing you see people at the post office and grocery stores with, that little wet sponge in a container, to do the job.

Like anything else, just try different things out and find what works best for you.

Peace,
KM
