Absolute horse shit.

You are so totally wrong. Look stop reading shit out of a magazine. And then quoting in.

The signal is affected by absolutely anything that it go's thru.

For instance play back some samples in reason then do some in pro tools.

Listen to the high end.

Now let me be very clear on this.

Companys like emu and akai developed the technology they used for many years. Thats why akai have a very musical sound.

Look imagine like this. Why would a few programming geeks in a bedroom
who had limited listening experince be able to, magically come up with something that sounds as good as something like pro tools.

I am sorry. Look does a $50 soundcard sound as good to you as an apogee converter?

If so (which it probably does) then what it means is you need to develop your ear more.

Use cds mixed by people like phil tan etc.

Practise listeing to the high end. You will see it feels solid.

On programs like reason it feels washy. And muddy.

I use an emu soundcard... akai s2000 rack sampler... and fl studio simply to sequence.

By the way.. i got props from various peeps from various studios and sh!t for the sound i get.. and props on my sound bein better in some cases then some peeps usin hi end sh!t...

It comes down to how u use sh!t more then the equipment, yeah some one who knows how to use theyre decent sh!t gonna be diff... but exactly.. works both ways.. dont matter what equipment u got some peeps make wack from alot of expensive equipement as well... check jaromes sh!t.. and aparently he uses $50,000 worth of equipment.

Anyway.. stop talkin bullsh!t and lets hear some of ur sh!t...

And more importantly.. get off my nuts

im far from jealous, i have my own studio... and yes, there are free warez everywhere, but if someone is serious they will invest SOMEWAY or SOMEHOW in themselves..

and for your information FL7 (like most SW out there) has a trial period that this dude can actually take time to learn these tools before he spends his money..

$49 is bottom rung, and if he cant afford that very little investment, then it is my OPINION that he should not be trying to do music right now..

How dare you!

Do you know who are talking to?

I have sold more records then times you have tossed off after not meeting a girl at the disco.

I am Mr sound.

why dont you tell us? give us an overview of what went into the design, development and implementation of FL's products...?

tell us about FLs sound design and compare it to protools for us? i'd be interesting in knowing whether or not you know what goes into these products other than its price and name..

Thats a good answer actually.

Well on a more serious note.

Here are some of my serious recomendation's.

Of how to conduct audio tests. Ok these are big secrets. It took me years to work this stuff out.

So pay attention.

Firstly you will need some good cd's.

Ok this is not a fashion contest. 2 very well recorded and mixed songs are.

Rhiana SOS

And portis Head dummy album.

Ok next you will have to sort your monitoring out.

I use 2 sets of spekers. Sprit absolute 2's.

and samson resolV40a.

There is no point using expensive speakers. Total waste of time. No mix engineers use big or expensive speakers.

Ok this part is very important.

DO NOT MIX ON BIG SPEAKERS. also DO NOT MIX LOUD.

My volume on my samsons is set at a quater circle. And my audio cards out is maybe at 12 o clock.

ok here is the hard part. When you choose your instrumentation.

firstly write your lead lines and chords all in the 2nd octave.

any sounds that wonder in to the higher octaves need to be mixed well back, but.........

Do not start writing with any bright sounds. As it will throw your perspective out the window.

Also when you come to the kick. This is by far the most important part.

With kicks do not use any with a bright or accented mid part to the sound.

Or it will blow your mix. The kick should have very limited harmonics.

If you start with the kick. And eq out the top. Then this will put you in a good standing. To write the rest of your tune with. If the kick gets drowned out. You have chosen the sounds wrong.

You should be able to tell if your instrumentation is right. As when you use an Eq a small amount will have an obvious effect.

If a sound is to full or muddy. An eq will sound less obvious.

Ok so practise that for a while.

Then you will be able to conduct an audio test. between software.

Hey c0mplex how do you like the S2000 sampler? What made you choose it? I´m just curious cause IMO the hardware we use have a strong effect on art and creativity. And the setup you have sounds interessting to me.

I really like it man, i chose it coz i wanted a piece of hardware for the accurateness of choppin and the sound charicteristics but i also wanted to keep sequencing using the pc and the sequencer i was used to so i thought id go with that.. i did look at the s950 although its good for drums i didnt want my melody chops so dirty (my boy previously used one before switchin to s2000 himself, so i went half on his advice on that and half on what i heard for myself) so i decided to go with s2000... plus i found it quite cheap on ebay which is also a bonus.

What we use definatly effects how we do things, but then it comes down a hell of alot to the users skills as well... 1 thing I found with the s2000 compared to choppin on software is the fact that u can make super small chops on s2000 which work real dope, chops that would have sounded wack and not really worked on software, it has opened up alot more ability to work things in diff manners that before didnt seem as possible or just sounded wack... (if thats the right way to explain).

I really like the lil screen on the s2000 as well and the controls, they way u navigate between things and how sh!ts displayed.. real quick to get down (took me an evening to work out) and just real nice to work with.

I guess i answered ur question but if there was any other info u was lookin for let me know and id be happy to answer

Peace

Yeah i feel the same with my S950, small chops sounds way better than on newer MPC´s or software Samplers. you obviously can hear it.
It´s really a joy to work with (old) gear like that, gives you a whole different feel and workflow (yeah "working" not **** around and playing pong on a **** sampler like nowdays) Also something i never thought is rely to my ears give me much better results than graphic displays of the newer samplers. Sounds crazy but it´s true i´m much more pleased with everything i made since then.
Thanks man i holla at you when i need some advice again.

I'm 17 and my parents reluctantly bought me two turntables and I haven't looked back since, but unfourtunately im on an incredibly tight budget.

I dig instrumental/underground hiphop and love funk and jazz; which basically got me wanting to start creating beats of my own.

Ideally I'd like to get an MPC but with such high costs I just dont think it's going to happen. My question to everyone is: Is there any cheap/free software, that can basically allow me to use my own samples (from my turntables and cds) and beat create. The software doesn't have to be nessicarily as powerful as an MPC, but just somthing that has the same basic features and works alright.

I'm quite well versed with computers so I think I just want to, for now, try and veer towards beat making software rather than actual MPCs.

Thanks everyone!

hey man check out GURU. that software will do everything you need it to

yo complex.

How do u find the timing from the pc for midi.

I am using pro tools. Find the timing all over the place.

I would like to know from some one using a rack and a pc sequencing.

I am probably selling some stuff to go get an mpc again. Its the only thing i find tight enuff.

would like to work with pro tools sequencing tho, maybe i have something wrong some where.

Yeah man i def co sign that one! Goin by ur ears makin chops sound so much better, its the TINY innacuracys which give the chops the good charicteristics compared to wav display choppin where sh!t just starts bang on the start of the sample givin it no charicter just a straight sound (not sure best way to explain but im sure u know exactly what i mean), i think thats one of the main reasons why small chops work so much better on the old rack samplers.

Gritz.. how can i possible teach anything to the best producer in the whole world.. especially when I dont know sh!t (ur words)... i should be the one askin u advice...

Anyway.. as some one said to me once,, knowlege is like gold.. and should only be shared with the right peeps, fair enough this is a public access forum if u wanna call it that and anyone can read advice or post.. but theres certain persons i wouldnt directly answer questions for..

Although again,.. what could myself (some one who knows nothin) possibly teach such a master like urself (whos music is so good u cry listenin to it)?

hey i have been doing this for 13 years now.

I don't know what a chop is?

i think it means sample. Well in that case of course it will sound better off a sampler.

You know those akai racks have a lot of good shit in them. Akai was a great developer of a lot of studio technology.

They made products like sb1 deep impact and harmoizers as well.

There is no magic in it. think on it like this. why does an akai filter still sound better then a plugin?

The reason is not cpu power. Its that they had a better design.

I look at a lot of this new stuff and feel sorry for people getting into it now.

Their is so much misinfo about. And the emphasis is on the wrong things.

like why do you want to have 50 synths at once, when they all sound lacking?

and the fxs in the akai samplers are excellent.

I hope you dont mean analog filters, cant compare them to any digital ones. The filters in the akai samplers are well crafted, but there are plugins that are in no way inferior to them.

Dont like this view at all, shared information is doubled information, dont you know?

Back 2 topic, i worked with FL a lot and would recommend it too, but theres definitely a difference in the sound, compared to lets say cubase. If you just play a sound in it you wont hear much difference, it becomes obvious when you are mixing lots of tracks. When i learned to hear that stuff i started to render the tracks and mix it in cubase, it just felt like theres more space for the elements in the tracks, which i think has to do with the mixing algorithm.
