Hi am I correct in assuming that the 'sample compression' function that doubles memory capacity in the V3 OS mPC60 is resampling from 40khz down to 20khz? I want to share samples of drum loops in my s950 and sound the same so would sampling in 950 at 20khz be correct?

You are not correct. It's not downsampling, it's data compression. I have no idea why you would want to emulate it anyway. I'm sure there are better ways to waste your time.

"You are not correct" ... more the point.

The MPC60 DATA COMPRESSION is the result of a downsampling process. ( with no anti alias filtering during processing )

Samples in the MPC60 recorded at 40 kHz when "DATA COMPRESSED" are sample-rate reduced through a simple form of reduction processing to 20 kHz and become half their length in size.

Note that the DATA COMPRESSION function in Vailixi 3.50 works in the same way. ( MPC3000 sample rate of 44.1 kHz being the only point of difference )

Correct. A very simple method of downsampling.

Well that's what i get for never bothering much with it. Thanks for not letting me spread too much bullshit.

But since you've now peaked my interest is the file itself resampled to 40kHz but playing back at half speed or does it actually have a header saying it's 20kHz??

No header data on the sample rate.

Header data on the sample playback pitch. ( tuning parameter ).

Playback still happens at 40 kHz but the sample is tuned down to make up for the reduced ammount of data left after the compression process has been performed.

What will the downsampled 3000 .snd sound like converted to .waw and played back normal? Fast?

Will it not be possible to pitch samples down from 0 at all after this process? (the sampler engine pitch it down)

I guess this will be great for kicks an bass, but maybe not for snares and hi-hats because of the reduction of higher frequencies. But maybe that's just a small reduction.

What would be the difference in sound by doing this rather than recording a sample at double speed and pitching it down? Does it get as dirty/lo fi?

I guess the quality will be better because of the record is beeing played at the right speed, right?

I have thought about this. I dont think I'm the only one or that or that I'm a super genius or something, but some of you can maybe confirm if this is right:

When the record is sped up to double the tempo, all the frequencies are moved up. If I cut the lower frequencies entirely, speed the record up and sample, and then pitch it down on the MP, there is suddenly pretty much low freq on the sample.

This also applies to the high frequencies, and when theese get moved up, they will get beyond the limited area of both the sampler (20khz?) and the needle on the deck. Then I will loose some of the high frequences.

I love the grittyness of the samples pitched up and tuned down tho'. But i guess this is why having the process done inside the sampler will sound "better", bacause of the sample containing all the frequencies.

I may be wrong tho', but it would be logical if it works this way.
